UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hi again,

I’m just wondering if you guys weigh one essay more than another. It seems that many other applicants keep stressing the creativity and uniqueness of the extended essay. Though I liked my extended essay, I thought I was more creative on two of my other essays. I’ve heard that UChicago’s uncommon prompts are used to encourage applicants to write non-traditional essays. Will this hurt me?

Thanks for answering all my questions!

Hi UChicago, I already submitted my application and I wanted to know if there was anyway to change my decision from regular decision to early action.

Grace,
I live in California. I submitted my application at 11:51 on November 1, according to MY time zone. On the Common App, it says I submitted my app on November 2. It was not November second. Will I be penalized for this? Thanks for your help you are the best!!!

Hi Grace,

I am applying for international student financial aid. UChicago requires 2 forms of financial aid applications, ISFAA and University of Chicago’s Application for Financial Aid. I already sent my ISFAA. However, I am unable to find the University of Chicago’s Application for Financial Aid. Where do I find this form? Am I considered on time for the application? I also logged in to my account. It’s not there either. Thank you very much for your help.

@college1123: it’s fine- the same thing happened to my friend today, but she called admissions & they said it wasn’t a big deal

So I wrote my commonapp essay and i wrote my chicago essay. However, there are few things that I’d like the admission people to know such as the reasons why I decided to volunteer at a hospital, train to become an EMT, and volunteer at an ambulance corps when I want to major in political science or why I, a person with 3.4 UW GPA and dramatic upward trend that goes from 2.8 to 4.0, feel like I can offer something unique and beneficial than someone with 4.0 GPA to U of C’s community. Is it a good idea to write an extra letter/essay explaining those reasons or will that be too much and consequently lower my shot at University of Chicago?

Helloicarus: Just out of curiosity, what was your Common App essay about if not that? I think that that would have been a good time to weave all of that information in…

My commonapp essay focuses on adaptive perseverance. I discuss how being only perseverant is often not enough to achieve success; one needs to learn from his mistakes while fighting on. I talk about baking in the beginning because that’s where I first learned it and went onto a personal example of failing my first Biology test to show how I incorporated the lesson I learned by baking to practical matters.

My supplemental one is not yet completed but it explains why I am applying to political science major…well not really. You have seen my chance thread, my EC is mainly science and medicine based. I want to tell them why I decided to do those EC’s despite my interest in political science and why I believe I will be a unique and beneficial addition to their school. You don’t see so many EMT’s with hospital experience applying for political science major.

Neither of these essay cover a few points that I would like to make which is why I am considering to send a letter. As you know, GPA is really one of few things that I believe is not “U of Chicago worthy” and I really don’t want it to stop me from joining such an awesome community

hell,

You should start another thread for the subject matter. Grace is not going to comment on “chance me” subjects which you are trying.

My posts are not at all “chance me” posts. My question is clear. “Do admission officers at U of Chicago like to look at extra letters of significant information or is it better to send in only the material they asked for?” I just had to bring out some part of my application to answer the question asked. Moreover, that long post with the information of my essays is directed to cookcfc, not Grace.

All- apologies for my delay in responses; as you know, it’s that time of year!

Hello soccersara, we prefer to see letters of recommendation from teachers who know you well in different subjects; sometimes this aligns with your future goals, and sometimes it doesn’t; we never want to make you feel like you have to ask a teacher who knows you less well simply because that’s the area you plan on pursuing. You are also welcome to submit one third, optional recommendation, and your orchestra conductor could certainly satisfy that.

Hello casablancama, you will be able to submit your supplement until tomorrow, Monday the 7th, although we do ask that you take advantage of this option only if you were adversely affected by inclement weather in your area.

Hello Amelia9009, at this time we do not anticipate a weather-related delay in decisions.

Hello HYPSdreamer, don’t worry-- this is a minor error and it is not necessary to send in an updated essay to correct it.

Hello Poseidon, the “supplemental materials” section is not open for the submission of your UChicago Supplement; it is only open for the submission of additional materials, like arts material, research abstracts, resumes, and the like. Any student, East Coast or non, has the ability to submit material through this section until the 15th. Sorry for any confusion with the two similar names.

Grace - is that 15th of November to add additional material in the website?

Hello littlepenguin, it’s hard for me to answer this question since there are many things that go in to us making your admissions decision. Rest assured that we do read all of your essays-- they are all important to us.

Hello ashleytylerMC, you should e-mail collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu with this question.

Hello helloicarus, you are welcome to submit an additional document explaining these circumstances if you wish to.

Texaspg, yes, you have until Nov. 15th to add additional material (arts supplements, etc) to your account in the “portfolio” section.
