UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

hello!wonderful thread! :)

I have 3 little questions:

  1. Does sending 2 subject scores give me an advantage over a student who has not sent it or not?(scores are high 740+)
2)Is it legal to send EA application to UC, simultaneously send Early Action-restrictive to other college and/or early decision application to third college? How can it make me troubles?
3)Is there quotas for foreign countries? or Does geographic location matters? For example: I am from East Europe. will i challenge with east europe candidates, indian candidates or candidates from my country?

Hi Grace,
I am in the process of an online calculus course from JHU’s CTY and I was wondering if I could self-report my current grade at this time (to be considered with the rest of my EA application). I know it may be a moot point right now, but I cannot send a transcript for consideration before the admissions decisions are released. I was a (very humanities heavy) sub-par math student in my freshman/sophomore level math classes (a- and b+), but have shown some improvement with harder coursework (as I tend to do better in more difficult classes). I already sent my first quarter grades from my high school classes (indicating a high AP Stats grade), but have not sent anything about calculus. Should I send my calculus grade to my regional admissions officer? If so, can I just e-mail him my current grade? Since I am not seeking school credit for this course (just the enjoyment of the subject), it would be easiest to self-report this grade. Thank you so much for all of the helpful answers/advice you have posted thus far!

Artisan and others, don’t worry about the lack of checks-- this means we have received everything we need from you, and now all you need to do is sit back and relax until decisions are released (when? I still don’t even know, but I’ll let you all know once we announce!)

berrycherry-- thank you!!

akohley, I am not able to provide any student’s “chance” of acceptance to UChicago.

doctoribach, to answer your questions in order: 1. no, we do not require SAT-II subject tests; if you are interested in sending them you may, but they are not a deciding factor in the admissions process. 2. No, you may not do this; single choice EA schools require you to apply to only that school, and if you are found to also be applying to other schools, you are violating the standards of single choice and jeopardizing your application. You may apply to other Early Decision schools, but at UChicago we do ask that our EA applicants who are accepted to an ED school withdraw their application from us immediately. 3. no, we do not have quotas for students from any area.

Historian 17-- feel free to self-report this grade.

Hello Grace,

An acquaintance claims he has already received an offer of admission into UChicago because he submitted his app in early October. Is this plausible or is he yanking my leg?

Hi Grace! Thank you so much for answering all these questions! I noticed from this and another thread that lack of green checks means you have indeed recieved the Early Application. I went on my account and still have the list of green checks. Does this mean mine has not been recieved? I had submit mine by the Early App extended deadline due to power/weather troubles, and I want to make sure I am still being considered Early Action. Thank you!

mcrios, we have not sent out any official offers of admission to any student, regardless of when the app was submitted. We have sent out a small number of athletic “likely” letters, but these are conditional on a student’s continued excellent performance in school. Official EA offers of admission will be sent out sometime in December.

Blaserk, don’t worry-- it does take us some time to go through and verify everything in all 8500+ of our early applicants’ files, so don’t worry if the green checks are there or not there; unless you are contacted by us to indicate otherwise, your file is complete.

hi! are likely letters given to only those who applied early action, or are they also given to RD applicants?

Hello grace,
I submitted my early action app and forgot to submit the supplement. Will be be rejected or deferred next month?

casablancama, we are unable to evaluate files of students who have not submitted the supplement; unless you re-submitted the documents during our resubmission time, you’ll likely be contacted by our tech team and asked to submit your full application during regular decision.

Hi Grace,
I had my interview on last Tuesday. The interview was great and lasted for 1.5 hours. My interviewer said he’ll write me a great recommendation letter. Since Uchicago already finished processing application materials, will that recommendation be able to make its way to my file?
Thank you so much for taking time to answer all of our questions!!

My school puts the SAT/ACT scores on our transcript. Although I did fairly well on my SATs, I was sick during my ACT test and did not finish it on time, so I did fairly poorly. I did not submit my ACT scores, but since it shows up on my transcript, will the admissions counselors view that negatively?

Does the University of Chicago ever send academic likely letters?

snipersas, it would be courteous to Grace if you at least read the page you are posting on! The answer to your question is in the post at the top of this page.

When does UChicago generally distribute likely letters for RD applicatants?

^ no it’s not. I asked if the University of Chicago sends academic likelies, not whether they have this season. Most of the ivies don’t start sending them until January or February, so I wouldn’t expect Chicago to start until around then.

Based on this there are no academic likelies.

Uh oh, looks like I opened a can of worms by just mentioning likelies  We do not send out academic likely letters during the EA round. No need to worry.

Grace - are you suggesting there are academic likelies in RD?

Hi Grace,

Does UChicago really not consider the SAT Writing section?

Will an alumus (I’m an international applicant) contact me after I submit my RD application? Or do I have to arrange one myself?

My school releases my next transcript in January after the RD application deadline. Will that transcript be considered if submitted between mid-January and early February?

Thanks!

texaspg, there have been in the past. I don’t know of any plans to discontinue this; it seems likely that very select, exceptional students may receive them this year as well. the vast majority of our eventually admitted students will not receive one, so not receiving a letter is not a cause for panic in RD.

shootastar: SAT writing scores are not a factor in our decision-making process. You do need to express interest in having an alumni interview once you have admitted; we do not automatically contact students with an interview offer. And, yes, we will consider your midyear grades even if they are submitted by your school after our deadline.
