UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hi Grace.
I requested my SAT scores to be sent to UChicago today the 24th and I’m afraid that it may not get to the admissions office before January 2nd. Should I place another order of faster shipping to make sure that the scores will be there before January 2nd?
Also regarding music supplement, I was told by Mr. Brinker that I can submit the supplement via uchicago account. Does that music supplement need to be handed in before the deadline as well? Thank you in advance!

Hi Grace! I was deferred and I have a question about the continued interest e-mail to my regional admissions officer. In that e-mail I send to her, will it be forwarded to the adcoms who will be re-reading the application? If not, I would like to upload my writing as a supplemental writing my UChicago account. Does that sound like a correct course of action? Thank you!

Another question. :P

For the midyear report, do we just submit it onto Common App, or upload it in our UChicago account? Thanks again!

I jst want to ask dat
does uchicago accept may and june sat scores or not
and 1 more q
that only critical reading and math sec are evaulated in uchicago
so the marks will be considered 1600 instead of 2400

Ashumalik let me save Grace some time.

If you are applying for Fall 2012, the last month you can take SAT is January. For ACT it is February.

And Chicago takes only CR and M scores into account. So yes, 1600 and not 2400.

Nw wat is dis fall 2012
and u didnt ans my q dat uchicago considers may june sat score or nt

if i want to apply for fall of 2012
will my scores of may june 2012 will be considered or not
if not when they will be considered…???
or they will consider the scores of may june 2011

2011 is fine, 2012 is not.

Hi two questions,

I just sent my SAT scores on the 24th but not Rush, will that be OK?

Also, I have a 1000 word extended essay, I feel it’s worth the words and quite captivating but I understand the strain adcoms will be under. Would you recommend I try and cut it down even if it means loosing some content?

My daughter applied RD on 12/19. She got instructions to set up an account to check her application status, but when she goes there all she sees is that her app was submitted under “Recent Activity.” She thought she would be able to see a list of what had been received (Common App, Supplement, School Forms, SAT scores, etc.). Should she just assume that everything is in, or does she need to follow up?

simpleton, sui generis, and violinist, it is OK to upload new materials in your account-- feel free to put in whatever you’d like, although, of course, make sure to keep this information relevant; a new essay is fine, updates of important awards are fine, but please do not feel the need to ask additional teachers to write recommendations or to send us a novel. We do not replace any materials currently in your account with new materials you upload, but will review the new materials in addition to your old materials. Please do be respectful of your admissions counselor; one e-mail now and perhaps one more later is fine, but more than two e-mails would be cumbersome. You should include whatever you’d like to in this e-mail, but I’ve found that e-mails I find useful are those that update me of any new information that I should be aware of (perhaps smaller things that do not make sense to upload in to your file) and to reiterate that UChicago is a top choice for you.

canbambiswim, yes, if you are a domestic student, you are still eligible to apply for aid. See here for more information on applying: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/

sputnik93, you should receive access to your uChicago account in the coming weeks; feel free to e-mail collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu if you do not have access to your account one week after submitting your application.

DarthSpawnus, please submit both a midyear and a final report, even if they will say the same thing :)

helloicarus and others, it is not necessary to rush scores. Please note that because of the holidays your accounts will not be updated immediately after you’ve sent in your material. So long as your Common Application and Supplement are sent in by our January 3rd deadline, your application will be considered on time. Other materials may arrive after that deadline (although of course please make every effort to have them in before) at no detriment to you.

skittlescutie, your regional admissions counselor is the admissions counselor who has primary responsibility for your application and has read your application already, so you’re all set if you send it to that person. Please upload your new writing material to your UChicago Account. Your midyear report should be mailed unless your school is able to submit your official transcript to us online.

ashumalik, for students applying for entry in to the Class of 2016, January SAT and February ACT scores will be accepted. We will only accept June and May scores for students seeking entry to the class of 2017, who will apply in the fall of 2012.

challenged, no need to send those scores rush-- regular sending is fine. We would prefer that your essay be around 500 words, but you may go over if you feel that you have given thought to editing and making your words concise.

YogaMom, most of our processing team is currently on holiday, although we are working hard to input students’ material, so sent materials may not be reflected immediately in the student’s account. We will contact your daughter if we find that anything is missing when we begin to read her application.

Hey Grace! Thanks for answering all the questions they’ve been extremely helpful.

I was wondering, if I already sent in my SAT scores but I’m not satisfied with them and want to take the ACT in February, will the admissions office still take the ACT scores into consideration or will it be too late because of my SAT scores? I e-mailed the admissions office and they said it might be difficult to review February scores in time.

Also, how much weight do standardized test scores carry in the admissions process?

Thanks again!

Hi Grace

Do adcoms at UChicago usually reply to “continued interest” emails? I got a reply and it basically said it’s great to hear that Uchicago is my first choice. Is this a good sign?

Thanks!

^what an ironic username ;)

Hi Grace,

Thank you for answering my question!

I would like to ask about the interview. I requested for one, but no one has contacted me yet. May I know if there is a deadline we need to get the interview done by? Thank you very much!

Hi Grace,

I am an international applicant who is not applying for financial aid. Do I need to submit any financials forms, such as the International Student Certification of Finances? If so, what is the deadline for such forms?

Thank you!

Hi Grace, as an early admitted student, is it okay if I drop one of my nonacademic classes (Teacher’s Assistant) for second semester? It’s basically a free period and I usually use the time to do my homework from other classes and/or occasionally help my teacher grade packets. The thing is, TA is my last period of the day and I’d love to go home a little early. And if it helps, I’m enrolled in five AP’s this year so I really didn’t need the TA class in the first place.

Thank you!!

caricature, you may send in your February ACT scores, we do consider them.

AimingForIvy, it depends on the counselor-- we do try to respond to all of these notes, but the sheer volume of email we receive often makes replying to every e-mail impossible. Other students, rest assured that even if you do not receive a reply to your e-mail from your counselor, your continued interest is noted.

simpleton, interviews are ongoing until February, so do not worry if you have not been contacted to schedule an interview yet.

student276, no, we do not require a certification of finances unless you are admitted and decide to enroll.

loldaniel, this would definitely be a good thing to discuss with your guidance counselor before deciding to do, but this would not be a problem at all for us.
