UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

andrea21pirlo21, you may e-mail this to internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu, and it will be sent to the counselor responsible for China. You may also feel free to upload an additional essay in to the Profile section of your UChicago account if you wish.

Generation, please don’t worry! This happens. You may e-mail your regional counselor to clarify if you are overly concerned.

Dear Grace,

I am somewhat uneasy about my extended essay length. It feels fine to me at 540 words, but I’m worried it will look short and therefore unenthused as the prompt suggests ‘a page or two’. Thoughts?

540 words is fine, we suggest a 500 word length or 1-2 pages-- you’re right on target!

Hi, I have a question about the Uchicago account.
Although I have submitted my commonapp, I did not receive the PIN as the website mention as a code to sign up for a UChicago account. I have to submit my IFSAA through UChicago, so I am afraid I wont make it before Jan 3rd. However, I sent a copy along with my school forms via mail . Can you reply this question as soon as possible :?
Thank You

Playing off missotisregrets’ question, if my Why UChicago is 718 words, Favorites is 475, and Extended is 664-- is this collectively too much?

phhaiptnk, please check the Spam filter of your e-mail account; the PIN generates automatically and often goes through to spam. If it is not there, contact internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu and they will reset the PIN.

cqm547, that is fine as well-- a little on the long side but as long as it’s quality we’ll be fine with that length :)

Hi Grace,
I’m an international student submitting my application today. Given that it’s pretty much impossible for me to access my UChicago online account before the ISFAA due date, can I scan and email the forms with an explanation, and upload them as soon as I receive my PIN?
If I were to do this, would I send the email to collegeadmission@uchicago.edu or to internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu?
Thank you so much!

Hi Grace! I am a junior this year and will be applying next year, early action. My family is travelling to Chicago this spring and I wanted to visit the school while we are there. Would that be too early for an on-campus interview? I live in MA so it’s a little tough/costly to fly out twice.
Thank you!!

sockpuppetmaster, yes, this would be OK. You should direct the information to internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu.

soccersara, we do interview juniors in the springtime, beginning in May. Unfortunately we are not able to accommodate juniors for interviews before May. If you will be here in May, feel free to sign up for an interview on our website (not yet open to register, but will be in the coming months: [Interviews | The University of Chicago College Admissions](http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/visiting/interviews.shtml))

Okay, we’ll plan our trip for may then  thank you!!

Admission Reps won’t be upset, put off, or anything like that if we choose essay option 5 and answer an older Chicago prompt?

I just read all 52 pages of this. Obviously I just submitted my app, and therefore it’s really important for me to know all this. No, I don’t have Calc Homework.

Grace, you da bomb. Try not to get bogged down in millions of apps and all the repeated questions in this thread, haha.

How easy is to switch majors, specifically from business to economics?
What is the process?

How can I confirm that my admissions officer received my defer applicant e-mail?

Do you still follow this policy?
The University of Chicago has – surprise, surprise! – a somewhat unique take on this question:
Quote:
Each year, students ask us what is the latest time they can submit their Early Action applications online. Is it midnight on January 2, Central Standard Time?

So here’s the deal: you have until midnight on January 2 – anywhere in the world.

. . . .

If you are submitting your application after midnight in your local time, e-mail Libby . . . and tell her under which time zone you’re applying. She will be awake, making sure everything runs smoothly until it’s January 2 everywhere. Supporting documents, such as teacher recommendations and the secondary school and transcript report, should be in our office by January 8.

P.S. One of the last places on earth that it is January 2, 2008 is Baker Island.

P.P.S. If you’re mailing your application, be sure it’s postmarked no later than January 2.

P.P.P.S. Relax! The Dean of Admissions will not be reading applications until after he finishes watching the Rose Parade, so do not fret if you need to turn in the application on Baker Island time.
I would not rely on this being the policy elsewhere, however. (I also assume they really mean “Regular Decision” applications, since they have already disposed of their Early Action applications.)

So we have until midnight January 3 right?

Nevermind, scratch that question above. ^

My new question is about when teacher recommendations are due.

I just noticed on my common app that my school forms and recs were never downloaded by the uchicago. They were sent over a month ago. Should i be concerned?

breakingavow-- it is perfectly fine to answer a past UChicago essay prompt for Option 5.

bungalowdillon-- thank you!

myjeselle-- very easy. We do not have a business major at the undergraduate level, so any student who is interested in business prepares for business through internships and targeted advising while participating in the major of their choice. Generally, switching majors is quite easy; so long as you aren’t too far in to a program (say, Spring of your 4th year) all you need to do is have a meeting with your adviser to switch your major, as there is no separate application process for the majority of our majors (including economics).

afrowiggle, sort of-- the time stamp really doesn’t matter to us, so long as you make an effort to submit your application at some time on the 3rd, and we realize that other materials may come in the mail after the 3rd. You do not need to e-mail us declaring a time zone. If you submitted your Common application and supplement when it could have been January 3rd somewhere on the globe (and, hey, a few minutes after the 3rd in Marshall Islands time is fine too) you’ll be considered for admission.

chaosakita, preferably postmarked on the 3rd and in to our office sometime close to then; it is OK if they arrive after the 3rd or are postmarked close-to-but-not-on the 3rd. However, it would not be appropriate to send your recs, say, two weeks from now (unless we contact you if they are lost in processing or in the mail).

Hello
I submitted my UChicago app on CommonApp and it was downloaded.
So how long will I receive my Uchicago login account and pin?
Thanxx
