How much merit scholarship do students generally receive. And, is it uncommon for Internationals to get it?

Thanks for the quick answer!
Earlier i asked about a midyear report for my trimester grading system. I just found out that midyear reports will be sent out on the 16th. Would you prefer i just send the Trimester 1 grades instead?

Hi!

I know this was just stated a few psots ago but if I sent in updates today - what is likelihood of it being read at this point? They are significant things like major scholarships and some awards.

I didn’t want to bother my regional counselor with a barrage of emails and was advised by my counselor, to wait till the last important event to send in updates. The event was on was on Feb 27, and now I am ready to send in the updates.

Should I call and ask for the updates to be read, or is that too much?

Thanks!

Hi Grace,

I am a Regular Decision applicant. Although I am not applying for financial aid, my UChicago account shows that UChicago is awaiting the FAFSA/CSS Profile documents and my parents’ tax returns. The deadline for submitting these documents has passed and I have not been contacted for missing documents.

Should I be concerned?

Thanks.

Hi Grace, I’m in the same situation as JaguarFan. I’m an international applicant and has not requested for financial aid. My UChicago accounts says that the form does not apply to international students applying for financial aid. So if I did not apply, should I ignore it or still fill out the forms?

Also, I know the deadline to post any supplemental materials on the portfolio has passed long ago, but I recently did an analytical essay as part of my school work and really enjoyed it. May I still submit it on my portfolio, even though: a) it may be too late and b) it’s not exactly a creative writing piece as suggested in the instructions, but an analytical piece based on a quote?

Thanks in advance!

ephemeral, about 10% of our incoming class will receive some type of merit-based scholarship. International students are considered for merit scholarships. We do not have an average merit award per student as they are given out selectively.

On financial aid: if you are not applying for financial aid, you do not need to submit tax forms, the FAFSA, or the CSS-profile. You may disregard the notice in your account that they are missing.

On submitting additional materials: you may send a brief message to your regional admissions counselor if you have significant new awards or achievements to update; we are very good about reading our e-mail and updating files appropriately. At this point it is unlikely that additional new supplemental material-- like additional essays or writing supplements-- will be considered. Please be conscientious when deciding whether or not to e-mail your regional counselor with an update; we’re happy to hear about your achievements but please make sure it is a brief message and does not cover any information you have previously sent to us.

On midyear reports: please send whatever midyear report you can send-- we’d like to have these as soon as possible, especially if you are a Regular Decision or Deferred applicant. If you are an EA accepted student, you may wait until you have your second trimester grades available.

Hi Grace. Thank you for all the help/advice you give! I am asking on behalf of my son-he was deferred EA and sent an e-mail expressing his continued interest, but he uploaded some additional awards, etc. and did not include them in the e-mail. He uploaded I think twice during January/February. Now I am getting nervous when I read about all these people sending e-mails with their updates-was he supposed to e-mail in addition to or in place of uploading this info?

Sorry to add to all the questions!

No worries shs1975-- if he uploaded his updates earlier they will be read as well, even if he did not e-mail to say they were coming. We check files for updates for all deferred students even if they do not contact the counselor directly to say they have been updated. I was speaking mainly for updates that students were interested in sending in new material right now/this weekend.

Hi Grace,

How will international students be notified of their admission decisions (post, email, or through UChicago account)? Thanks!

Hello,

I read somewhere that UChicago considers only Math+Critical Reading from the SAT scores that one may submit. Is it the same with ACT scores? What I mean is: will you consider only the Math and Reading (and Science) sections of the ACT? Or consider the composite score (with the English+Writing score)?

This probably sounds super confusing.

Also, on an unrelated note, in the short essay question (favorite books/films/et cetera), I submitted a list. Although the list was impressive (I think), will this adversely affect my chances for admission? I know I can’t do much now but I’m sort of freaking out.

shootastar, students will receive an e-mail notification letting them know that their decision is ready to view in their UChicago account. Admitted students, both domestic and international, will also receive a paper mailing.

dexter, you are correct; we consider the SAT critical reading and math, so, out of 1600 points; we consider the ACT composite score out of 36 including the math, english, reading, and science portions. The ACT writing subsection is not considered.

As for the list: the last essay is optional and students are welcome to submit their favorite things in whatever form they wish. A list is appropriate.

I actually thought the optional question on favorites asked for a list-although I know some chose to write essays and I was actually surprised to see that. Grace will I am sure answer (oops-don’t know how I missed she already did!) but I am betting either way is fine even if my recollection about the list is incorrect. Didn’t the application merely say it was an opportunity to get to know you? I know some people have been admitted (documented somewhere in this very thread I think) who did it in list form, and also some have been admitted who did an essay. Don’t stress!!!

Grace, for transfer students, will our regional rep from each area be reading our applications or are they just assigned to high school students?

Grace, is it still possible to send updates on awards I may have won? This Saturday I competed in the Massachusetts State Academic Decathlon competition and I won a silver medal in physics and a gold medal in Art History.

Roboticsfreak, we have a transfer student coordinator who is assigned to our transfer students, although transfer applications are, like undergraduate applications, read multiple times and taken through an admissions committee process. You may still feel free to reach out to the state rep if you have questions, though-- we are all well versed in the transfer admissions process.

iborpastan, I cannot guarantee that this will be something we can review with your application, but you may e-mail it to your regional counselor.

My daughter’s high school doesn’t rank students based on GPA, but she just found out that she is salutatorian. Is it worth sending an email to update her regional counselor? BTW, she already sent one update about new awards. Thanks in advance for your advice, Grace.

YogaMom, she is certainly welcome to e-mail this in to her regional counselor as a quick note.

Hi Grace,

I have been informed today that I am the valedictorian of the class of 2012 for our HS (large public, 700+ students). Is it too late to tell UChicago?

Thanks.

Hello Grace,

I have just completed my tax returns for the year 2011 and planned on sending them tomorrow. I was double checking UChicago’s Fin Aid website when I realized that I forgot to send in the tax returns for the year 2010 (which was due Feb 1). Is it too late to send it now? If not, can I mail both in the one envelope?

Thanks in advance!
