Hi Grace. I am a high school junior and looking to choose between calculus (non-AP level) and AP stats for senior year. Of the two, AP stats is considered more rigorous in my school. But I have heard that UChicago might value calculus more. I am a humanities type and am taking pre-calculus now (algebra II and geometry before that). Any advice?

jaguarfan, yes, you may e-mail this in.

spicymango, yes, go ahead and mail them in together.

skocollege, either sounds like a fine option; while I would definitely encourage you to seek calculus if you were interested in continuing in the sciences beyond Core level, AP Stats is a perfectly reasonable option, and in all we will be happy to note that you have taken four years of math in some way!

Hello!

I was just wondering if any rough figures have been released yet for the fees (tuition, room/board, etc.) for the 2012-13 school year?

Thank you! :)

Grace - there is a thread on CC listing various announcement dates and UChicago is listed as 3/19.

Is this date for RD announcement valid?

Hi Grace, if a deferred applicant doesn’t write an email about continued interest, but sends in some more material (letter of recommendation and research supplement), would it be viewed negatively? My Why UChicago essay was close to 500 words, and there isn’t much I can add to it, so I choose not to a send a letter because it would only be repeating the same reasons. Do you think I should send in an email, even if it is short and repetitive?

Thank you Grace.

mam1298, it looks like the 2012-2013 costs have not been released yet. I would not expect that it would present more than a small increase from this year’s costs, which may be found here. https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/cost.shtml

texaspg, we have not yet set our decision release date for this year, so I am not sure where the thread found that date. I will post here when we know the date. It will likely be after the 19th but certainly before April 1st.

tastycles, no need to worry. We are happy to have students reach out through any means, including additional material like research. If you would like to reach out to your regional counselor with a quick e-mail you may feel free to do so.

With all due respect to Grace, some of us may have a different idea of what a “small increase” is. U of C has raised tuition 4-5% annually for at least the last ten years (past tuition data is easily found online). That means you’re looking at a $1,600 to $2,000 increase in tuition alone for 2011-12, never mind increases in room, board, fees etc. In fact, COA may hit the dreaded $60K mark this fall.

Yes, yes, that’s retail pricing…before scholarship assistance for those lucky enough…

for those lucky enough…

I faxed my parents’ financial materials (W-2’s & 1099’s) last week. But I have not yet received any confirmation. How do I make sure that your office did receive the materials?

I don’t want to get rejection in financial aid application just because my submitted materials are lost.

Thanks!

Thanks Grace :)

itsme2, you may follow up with the financial aid office at 773-702-8666 if you are worried, but do note that it can take several days to a week for us to process materials. If admitted, late materials would not be cause for not receiving aid; you may hear back a little later than your admissions decision, but we guarantee to meet 100% of need for all domestic students regardless of when aid is requested.

Is there any date by which applicants accepted Early Action will find out about their final financial aid?

apptmom-- EA students who have not already received their aid package should hear back on or before March 23rd, when we release decisions for our Regular Decision applicants. If you do not hear back by the 23rd, please feel free to contact the aid office.

Hi Grace,

Just wondering about how many ‘likely letters’ are sent out each year, and if I haven’t received one, how much does that diminish my chances of admission?

Thanks!

hi Grace,

is it possible for an EA deferred student to be waitlisted?

I read somewhere from this forum, for UChicago, wait-listing is reserved for RA applicants only.

Hi Grace,

Can admissions committee hold it against a student if he or she cannot participate in a lot of extracurricular activities due to a disability?

vixtrader, a very very small number of likely letters are sent every year. The majority of our RD admitted students will not receive a likely letter. No need to worry.

nondairycreamer, yes, it is possible for a deferred student to be waitlisted. Although this happens very rarely, it is a possibility.

rbrbbrc, there are many reasons why students may not be able to participate in extracurricular activities (disability, long commute, sibling/family care responsibilities, etc); as such, we do not have a minimum level of involvement required for admission. We hope that students will find some way to active outside of school that is personally valuable to them and a reasonable use of their out-of-school time and efforts. If a disability or other situation makes extracurricular participation completely impossible, you may feel free to let us know by supplying a short explanation of the situation with your application.

How will the rd decisions be released and what time exactly? Thanks!
