Is it required to have one teacher recommendation be math/science, or just preferred? The two teachers I feel can write me the best recommendations are not in those departments. Am I okay?

Hello Londondad, I quite like Hyde Park and choose to live here even after graduating; I think, however, that you’re going to want more opinions than my own, and would encourage you to repost this in the general forum!

Hello collegekang, simply preferred; it is helpful if your recommendations come from two teachers in different subjects if they will be in similar subject areas (say, history and English, but not two English). If you do not think a recommendation from a math/science teacher will present you at your best then you should feel free to submit a rec from another subject area.

Thank you. Is it also ideal to send an additional letter from my employer if I have been with them for a long time and they know me well?

Hi! I was wondering if you are allowed to use visuals in your UChicago essay?

I know for the non-scientific essay prompt, the instructions say you are allowed to include charts and graphs and visuals… Does this apply for the other open-ended questions as well? And if so, could this mean pictures? Thanks!

Hello collegekang, you are welcome to send in a recommendation from your employer-- just please send only one additional recommendation.

Hello bubblyperfection, yes, you can use visuals if you like; the non-scientific essay certainly welcomes it. Make sure that the image is embedded in the file you upload and that you print-preview the Common App to make sure it shows up. You may also include visuals in your other essays if you like, although I will caution you to make sure they are really necessary before including them.

Hi I was wondering what one would do if they’ve already taken a college credit course at the University of Chicago? I’m a high school senior and I spent a summer taking two summer courses; would I have to attach a transcript to my application? If so, should I sent an official one (signed and sealed) or a copy of the eTranscript? Thank you!

Hi Grace, I’m wondering if, say, revealing that I have a psychological disorder (depression, anxiety, something of that sort) in my essay will negatively affect my application at all. Should I just keep that to myself?

Hello Grace

Q.1 How can I send my art supplement? Should I send it through common app or print the common app art supp form, attach a portfolio and mail it?

Q.2 Do I need to send copies of certificates/awards or do I need to make a resume and send it along with the supplement?

Thank you!

Hey Grace

I am an international student and have several questions.

Will applying to Merit Scholarships affect my chance of being enrolled?

In the common app, it says that non-academic (minister, supervisor, etc.) or a non-secondary school official recommendation must be sent by paper. Is that true for uchicago? If it is not, my school uses “Naviance eDocs”, so could I possibly send an additional rec from a teacher who taught me in a summer program in U.S. by common app online? If so, how does it work?

Thanks a lot!^^

WHAT ARE MY CHANCES FOR UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO ?

Please Reply :)

perhaps this has already been asked, but I was wondering about the optional essay… It says to list a few of our favorite books/plays/music/ etc, so does that mean like

“Movies: Star Wars, Inception, Godzilla
Musics: Britney Spear and the Rolling Stones
Books: Harry Potter and Catcher and the Rye”

(not that any of that is true, just first things that popped into my head)

OR are we supposed to, say, pick 3 of our favorite books and write a 250-500 word essay about why we like them and what they mean to you?

OR just write like a sentence or so about each one like “I like listening to _____ because their sound is very experimental and unique” (which I feel is a very generic thing to do, but you don’t have a lot of room if a sentence or so is what is expected)

If anyone can help clear this up that would be great… I was showing my essays to a teacher and he saw that I had option 1 (the list) going on and he told me I should write an essay and so I did but I ended up with about 2 pgs doubled spaced and I don’t want to surprise the admissions officer with yet another essay they did not want.

Hi Grace,

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions! This thread is awesome!!

I have 2 Qs for you:

Is a student’s correspondence with the Univ admissions staff, outside of the actual application, also included in the ad com “reading package”? Not being tongue-in-cheek here, but actually curious if any of the interaction with students during fairs or via email is included?

I attend an international school and don’t have a designated Counsellor, but a Teacher in Charge of the Senior Section looks into applications, etc. In filling out the Counsellor’s rec, should I request her to explain her title? Sorry if this is a trivial question, but the App Process= stupid questions assuming gargantuan proportions! But then, I guess you already knew that :)

Thanks again!

Hello DarthSpawnus, once you have submitted your Common Application or your supplement you will receive an e-mail prompting you to create a Chicago Account; you will be able to upload your arts or research supplement files there electronically. If you do not have electronic files you can send in a CD or a DVD or prints, but we’d greatly prefer them to be uploaded (even if it is just a short explanation of the work and a link to a reliable YouTube video).

As for copies of your certificates and awards, we really do not need to see those in copy or in resume form; you can feel free to list those accomplishments right on the Common Application under the space reserved for awards and extracurricular activities.

Hello Peterchen, applying for merit-based scholarships has no bearing on your ultimate admissions decision, so, no worries! Further, you should be able to submit one additional rec through the Common Application, as well as your School Official report, but if you cannot, you are welcome to mail them to us in paper form, so long as they are accompanied by the correct Common Application forms.

Hello lastoutlaw93, I cannot provide your chances of being accepted, as I have stated before; feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the programs we offer or UChicago generally!

Hello IsaacM, great question-- we really do want you to write an essay about this! A list is not appropriate. Feel free to pick one or a few things that you enjoy and speak about them in less than 500 words (shorter is also fine, but this is a short essay, so one or two sentences would not suffice).

Hello Chibby,

Your e-mails to us and time with us at college fairs are time where we want you to learn more about us; there’s no need to worry here, we’re really just there to provide information to you about the College, and not to write down that we saw you (it would be crazy to try and do so… I was at a fair on Sunday where I swear I probably spoke to a thousand people). E-mailing us with questions is great if you have them, but you do not need to e-mail us a resume or an email simply indicating your interest-- we’ll know you’re interested when you send us an application :)

And as for your second question, we know that schools work in many different ways in regards to this; if your teacher wishes to explain her position she may certainly do so, but it would not be a required portion of that section of the application.

Could I send in an arts supplement as an optional essay? I’ve been working on a lot of spoken word poetry for the past four years and record some of my poems at the end of each summer. One of my poems shows both the unique style of poetry I work with and another window to my personality that will help admissions officer better know me as a person. Converting the information of the poem into an essay simply won’t do it justice.

Is it possible to do this? Would it be a good idea? If so, how should I send it in?
(It would be an audio, mp3 file. Or wav. Whichever works.)
