I’m an international student. And here’s the freaking letter:
Dear XXXXXX,
Thank you for applying to the University of Chicago. According to our records, you have NOT applied for need-based financial aid. Please note that as a non-US citizen or non-US permanent resident, if you do not apply for financial aid before your admissions decision is finalized, you will not be eligible for any subsequent financial aid if you are admitted or at any point during your four years in the College. We recommend that students do not rely on merit-based aid if they do not have the funds to afford their entire four years at UChicago.
If you and your family have the resources to pay the full cost of attending four years of college at the University of Chicago, and you will not need to apply for need-based aid, please disregard this message. NO ACTION IS REQUIRED.
If you DO wish to apply for need-based financial aid, you must notify us immediately via email at internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu so we can adjust your records accordingly. You will also need to complete the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) online through your UChicago Account by Tuesday, March 10th, following the instructions available at https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/international-aid.
Please note that the ISFAA is the only form used by UChicago for need-based financial aid applications if you are not a US citizen or US permanent resident. This includes out-of-status, Deferred Action plan or otherwise undocumented students. If you have submitted a different form in error – such as the CSS Profile – you will need to complete the ISFAA. Otherwise, your financial aid application will remain incomplete.

Omg I just realized that Chicago doesn’t consider me an international cause I’m from Canada, that’s why I couldn’t have received the email. Gahhh I know this fixation on “the email” is incredibly stupid, as it likely means nothing, but realizing that just gave me a huge relief
I’ve just been reading endlessly about the other school I’ve gotten into (Williams) so that I won’t feel too bad if there’s bad news today. D: We also have a choir performance today, so hopefully that’ll take my mind off of things!

@DonCarlos, well greetings fellow maple leafer! And that’s absolutely true, we’re all in the same boat as of now. @spiderwoman already eloquently explained why the email by no means is an indicator of anything. It is simply a warning for internationals that if they are accepted, unlike domestic students, they will never get the opportunity to apply for aid again.
