I have been wait listed into UCI and accepted into SDSU, CSUF, and CSULB. I want to major in Business Management***, but I do not know what school I should go to. I live in the Orange County area. Money is not an issue, and I do not want location to be a factor, but my parents want me to stay close to home.
According to my counselor, SDSU has a good business program but my parents still want me to make a letter of appeal to UCI then decide. Would appealing to UCI would be worth it, and even if i do get accepted, should I still go to a Cal State? Which one? Also, apparently Cal States are better with hand-on business while UC’s are more research/Economics based? I need advice!!
***I have been very active in leading clubs at school and am known to be a leader. I love to be in charge, plan events, and coordinate with different people. I should have looked into more majors, but management seemed like the closest thing to what I know I am already good at. I am still not sure what kinds of majors I would be interested in, but business seems to fit me from my experiences so far.
The Cal States you have listed all have very good business progams (SDSU ranked the highest) and not that far away so your parents should be happy. There is no harm in appealing to UCI, but you need new and compelling information for the appeal to be approved. Just stating UCI is your first choice will not help, you have to show evidence in dramatically higher grades, new awards, possible mistakes on your application, incomplete or missing documentation. If you have any of these reasons, then go ahead and appeal. Also be aware that if your are accepted, it may be past the regular SIR deadline, so you still need to enroll in another school until you hear of your decision.
There’s no harm in appealing - just know, it rarely works. You can certainly ride out the waiting list hoping to slip into UCI. It is a very good school - if they will take you.
For business, I’d pick from your list in this order - SDSU => LB=> Fullerton. All 3 will give you a credible biz degree.
An important thing to keep in mind - housing deposits are open at many CSUs now. Meaning, the prime spots are filling up by the day. If you are dead set on riding out the UCI,waitlist - lock down a spot at your plan B.
Good luck.
