UCI Computer Science Program

I have been accepted into University of California Irvine Computer Science Program. I was curious as to how it compares to other well known CS programs. Also I am not a CA resident so is it worth the 50k a year to attend there? What Tech companies recruit from UCI?

Thanks,

Alec

Alec, everything looked good for an endorsement of your attending UCI, except for the non-resident full tuition for which you’d be liable. Unless you come from a well-off family, which means that they, your parents, can write a check for that $50K/3 payments per qtr as if it didn’t even affect their bank account based on a very high family income, I would advise strongly that you not do it. I don’t think there is a university in the country that one should take loans out on for a total bill even remotely approaching that amt X’s 4.

To answer your question, yes, UCI has a very good CS program and they also have an excellent game-programming major.

If you’re intent is strong towards wanting to come out to CA, and your parents aren’t as well-off as I referred above, look at attending a local cc or u in your area to defray whatever cost and later look to xfer to UCI. That way you/they could at least reduce the bill by almost ~ 1/2.

What about financial aid? Could I get enough to make it affordable?

Easy answer. No. You can get the same large classes and impersonal attention for much less in your state U.

Again, no. You’ll get exactly the same package of grants and work study that any CA resident gets. Aid for that huge OOS fee is entirely loans.

I also want to know what tech company recruit from UCI

lol Why in the world would anyone pay 50k per year to attend Irvine ? UCB, UCLA, UCSD are the only schools worth paying that much. You will find better or same quality education at other universities much cheaper than that. Where else were you accepted ?
