As it is almost time to start submitting those applications for the UCs (and I know there are a lot of CA people out there) I would just like to encourage those people to apply to a lot of them, because it is only 40 bucks, and no more work, and it might save you a lot of money in the end.

I applied to UC Irvine as an after thought basically and lo and behold I got a chancellor's scholarship (7k per year) and I got into the Campuswide Honors Program, which lets you pick all your classes ahead of everyone else, take honors courses, live in the honors hall (if you want), get 4 years guaranteed on-campus housing (if you want it), and a few other perks. I'm a freshman and so far I am enjoying my time here.

So, even though UCI and some of the other UCs aren't as sexy as Berkeley or UCLA, they offer some good programs and scholarships and such, so just apply cause ya never know if it'll work out for you/ possibly save you tens of thousands of dollars and be a great experience.

I think 90 percentish of the CHP at UCI go on to grad schools, and some of the best at that, and a lot of these people are on scholarship and saved lot's of money and got a great education. Also for those looking to do research, there are a lot of undergrad opportunities here.

OK I'm totally not trolling, just trying to show what's out there.

And my question is -I'm having trouble entering my planned courses for my senior year, any suggestions on how to remedy this..it says 'page won't display' -something like that

UCI is a very good school but every time I say that people attack me and say how terrible it is. Then again, they attack me any time I say anything good about California unless I say something about Stanford or Caltech. UCI with a scholarship cant be beat!

You don't need to apply separately for a Chancelor's scholarship. They offer them based on the strength of your app. They use it as an inducement to help them land the top students that they really want.

At Berkeley the Chancelor's is mostly an honor plus some housing perks & priorities - there is some but not all that much money involved. But at the second tier UCs it can amount to some real cash.

kingroger317, there is also a scholarship part to the app, where you check off boxes that apply to you which could be used as determining scholarships

i went uci and i hated, for many reasons. but uci just wasnt me. and i would have stayed given if i was a scholarship student and in CHP, like you. my girlfriend goes to uci. she hates it but she finds her classes really easy (shes super smart), and she'll graduate by the the end of winter quarter of her 3rd yr, saving her tons of money.

One other piece of advice: DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO SEND IN YOUR UC APPLICATION if you are applying online. There is ALWAYS a last minute crush that crashes the UC system computers, causing much panic and consternation among applicants. Beat the rush if you can.

Yup.

Oh, sorry to hear that. Are you going to USC now (I am guessing from your name)?

For most people, UCI wasn't their first choice, but most people end up really liking it here, not everyone of course. I didn't even apply to any private schools because I don't want to pay that much for undergrad. Irvine most definitely is not a "college town", it's not like Davis in that way, but I still have had fun here, and if you are the partying type, there are lots of college parties in Newport Beach which is really close. Pretty much college is what you make of it, you just have to take a different approach at different colleges I guess.

Good luck everyone and if you have any questions I'll try to answer them.

Plan on applying at least a week beforehand. There is a mad rush the last 2-3 days and things get particularly nerve-wracking on the last day. Why add any more stress than necessary?

How much harder is it for an out-of-stater to get scholarships? Plus isn't it a lot harder to get in, and if you do, more expensive than many good similar-level private schools? I'm having doubts whether I should even apply anymore.
