UCI Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

What number did you call?

@tealsunto Dang, that’s really awesome to hear! Honestly, being part of the UCI waitlist gang is discouraging.

I also applied to USC and haven’t gotten an SGR…that could mean a really good thing, or a really bad thing LMAO. Fingers crossed tho!

I got into UCSD for Molecular and Cell Biology in Marshall College and into UCI for Biological Science. To be completely honest idk where to go. I want to go to graduate school but I’m not sure if I want to do med school or pharm school, and I heard having a high GPA is really important for any grad school. UCSD is more competitive and cutthroat fro what I’ve heard and the social life isn’t great there. I have friends at UCI who love it there and I have friends who say UCSD can be kinda boring. I haven’t visited either campus but i will soon. What should I do???

Waitlisted

Computer Science
I’m from CSUF

3.67 GPA

Ending this spring with 83 units, not sure how many are transferable.
Involved in a few extra curriculars

Has anyone gotten UCI’s acceptance through mail? I got accepted on April 18th and I’ve yet to get anything through mail.

UCI hasn’t sent financial aid reward, mail, & sent RSVP for transfer day all last minute. They need to get it together.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been keeping up with the forums almost every day and just now decided to actually make an account haha. I’m currently waitlisted into UCI and admitted into UCSD! For UCI Transfer Waitlists, do we have a forum going? I’m killing myself by refreshing forums over and over again in hopes to see good news hahaha

@laylaylaiiiyaaa we’re in the opposite position. I was admitted to UCI but waitlisted to UCSD. it’s really frustrating because i got another month to wait for the final decision and may have to pay extra $250 to SIR another school

@Jose1996 you get the welcome package two to three weeks after you received your acceptance through your portal.

I completely feel you @okey307. I really want to go to UCI but since UCSD is my only other option (it served as more of my safe school) I will most likely pay to SIR until I hear back from UCI. This whole waiting game is killing me, especially since I live in the SD area. If I were to get into UCI I would have to find a place to live and move all in the short amount of time they give us as waitlist transfers!

Yea and waitlist don’t even hear back till end of July…

woohoo ucsd waitlist club. are you guys going to the transfer admit day this friday

@ricehappy10 hell yeah!

So I just contacted UCI Admissions to see why my TAG was denied, apparently it’s because I got a B- vs a solid B at UCSC in Calc 1. When I talked about that with my CC counselors, they said it shouldn’t matter, but it ended up costing me my guarantee.

UCI went stricto mode with my application. Do you guys think if I can show improvement in my Calc 2 grade I can write an appeal after I receive my final grade this semester?

@UCSCtoUCI I didn’t know they’d be so strict about tag requirement, maybe it’s because they have many highly qualified applicants this year. I heard some with 4.0 were rejected without TAG. But you should try anyway.

Contacted UCI:
I ultimately had a 3.4 gpa by the end of fall and in all terms, but in one they said that we need a 3.4 gpa in all subsequent terms. I have never read that we needed a 3.4 in all subsequent terms. I thought we only needed a 3.4 overall by end of fall and spring. Im so sad. I had 3.384 in that one term so i guess that is why my tag was denied

It’s a long read, but I’m asking you guys for some advice. Is this enough to appeal?

The only problem UCI found in my application (I tagged for CS) is that I am missing a semester of Calculus (Calc 1).

When I first enrolled in my community college (OCC), I showed them my AP Scores and for AP Calc AB I got a score of 3/5. In OCC, they accept that as the first semester of Calculus (Calc 1). However, in UCI, they only accept that as elective units. They don’t accept a score of 3 as credit for the first semester of Calculus (they accept a score of 4 or 5).

I took Calculus 2 in OCC and passed it with an A. So now I don’t know what to do. If I take Calc 1 in OCC, I won’t be able to apply to Comp Sci in UCI because it’d be out of sequence. You can’t take Calc 2 first then take Calc 1 (according to Denisse the evaluator I talked to over the phone). If I take Calc 3, I’d still be ineligible because I don’t have any credits for the first semester of Calculus.

When I first went to OCC and showed them my AP Scores, they placed me into Calc 2. So I never took Calc 1 because my ap score gave my credit for their first sem Calc. The main problem is that OCC accepted my ap score, but UCI didn’t.

I have two options now. Denisse (the evaluator) said that I can submit an appeal. This information was not present in my application and I feel like there’s some small chance an appeal could work. Second option is to explore other schools and see which schools accept my ap score of 3.

Basically all the things she said, she said there’s no guarantee. It’s poor miscommunication between UCI and OCC. and me. This is the dumbest reason realistically because I’ve shown that I can do Calculus 1. Based on the fact that I took an ap class for it and the fact that I got an A in calc 2. And taking calc 1 or calc 3 still wouldn’t help me get into UCI because it’d either be out of sequence or I’m missing calc 1. I’m virtually stuck at this point.

TL;DR

  • Tagged for CS. I’m missing calc 1 as a major prerequisite, but my ap scores placed me out of calc 1 and automatically put me in calc 2. I’m virtually stuck at this point bc I can’t take calc 1 since it’d be “out of sequence” and I can’t take calc 3 because I’d still be missing the first semester of calc 1.

Do you guys think this is enough to appeal?

Keep in mind the UCs honor TAG, but are not especially thrilled with it as they’re forced to accommodate 3.2s or whatever the minimum is by campus. With only so much space they are often forced to reject very GPAs. So they are strict. Plus, in the above case, it was a major requirement. OP didn’t say if they were rejected outright or just from TAG. If disqualified for TAG, applicants are rolled over to regular admission. So if OP was rejected that means regular admissions also disqualified the applicant. An appeal may or may not work.

@UCSCtoUCI @KeepItCool did you guys call or send them a message through their portal? I have 4.0 /w all TAG complete and I was rejected, but they won’t respond to me via their portal

I suggest you look through the TAG requirements for UCI, taking into account any GPA minimums or minimum grades or minimum required courses for your major. Be sure to carefully examine the top of your major on assist for specific rules. If you were denied a TAG, something is missing:

@uclaletmeinpls I called their office directly, I can’t respond in the portal either, so you wanna call their admissions office and give them your student ID number and they should help you out.
