UCSD doesn't have D1 sports, nor do they plan to so there goes that plan ;)

Voiceofreason - not sure where you get your information from.

"Watson (Vice Chancellor) says offering athletic scholarships at UCSD is inevitable, just as he believes the school will ultimately move to the NCAA Division I, a status most other UC campuses hold."

UCSD faculty has historically been totally opposed to any sort of athletic scholarships. They went D2 (all D2 schools give scholarships) and got a special provision that they would not give scholarships. Don't hold your breath for that to change anytime soon.

Even if they do go D1 they still don't have football.

If UCSD ever goes D1, they will just achieve the same results as UCI and UCSB in terms of Athletic prowess. Take that for what you want. Both UCI and UCSB have relatively successful programs...but nothing that will put them on the map.

Plus the way that UCSD is split up, segregates the campus and really lowers any chance for the students to rally and show any true semblance of school pride or cohesiveness. In my opinion UCSD has amazingly ascended to becoming one of the best schools academically in the world, unfortunately they have done this at the expense of student life. And that accounts for way more than just sports. As my friends and I joke...UCSD= UC Socially Deprived.

Its been almost 100 years since UCD was founded and I keep hearing things about how great their athletic program is.

tick tock tick tock

"After finishing first in NCAA Division II six times in 2003 and winning the NACDA Director's Cup 4 years in a row from 1999 to 2003, the UC Davis Aggies (or Ags) are currently in the four-year process of transitioning to NCAA Division I"

Ahh, 100 years and our Athletic program has done some remarkable things. But they were all in DII, no one knows or cares about DII. We have the elements for success in D1, a great football team that is on the rise (36 straight winning seasons and counting), we have great facilities (new stadium/Basketball Arena that sits over 7,000), an Athletic Department that expects to win, and student support from our college atmosphere. Beating Stanford in Football and Basketball with pretty much DII teams is just the top of the iceberg of the great things we expect from Aggie Sports.

Has anyone else noticed that UCI students especially seem to think so highly of their school? I mean it takes a certain amount of hubris to ask whether UCI is going to be the next flagship campus when it certainly won't happen while any of us are in college...

UCD just hosted the NCAA womens water polo championships at the incredible new Schaal Aquatic Center. They finished in 5th place. This is very impressive. Go Ags!

As for UCI
University of the Chronically Insecure

UC Davis football is traveling to TCU, alma mater of LaDainian Tomlinson next football season. On the UC Davis messageboards on Scout.com, I hear that our b-ball team is facing University of Oregon Ducks of the Pac-10 and are trying to work on facing the MIGHTY Duke Blue Devils. Mmm. Exposure.

Ehh..I don't claim that UCI is going to be the next "flagship" UC. They do have a strategic plan for moving in that direction in the next 10-15 years but I don't know how that'll actually pan out. Really though, it all comes down to personal preference--college town in rural NorCal or suburban university near the beach and in a bigger city. I don't even know why there's such a UCI vs UCD rivalry on these boards. Davis students can argue and cite random statistics all day and talk about how wonderful there school is and is going to be and then Irvine students can do the exact same back, but in the end it all comes down to personal preference. Is it just me or has this topic gotten really old? New subject anyone?

I second that yackityack. These stupid arguements between UCs are going to go around in circles. On top of that, UCI seems to be commonly getting dumped on by negative comments. Because I'll be attending UCI next year, this not very cool =P. Just give up on this. The second you create a brilliant notion that could degrade a UC, take it, shove it back into your mouth, and swallow it.

This link has been posted before, but here it is again dudes.

UCI is not the only UC with ambitious plans. Trust me they all have ambitious plans. It's competitive out there. That's why sports are so awesome. They train you for the real world.

Brothers who love sports let me hear you hollar! Ya sports train you in the real world and make the course fun as well.

i don't think any of the UC's have the potential to be the next Cal or UCLA

UCSD: has the academics but terrible sports program.

UCD: not academically recognized, middle of nowhere. Sports are alright

UCI: no sports

UCI has their sports, o_o. They are D1 with a volleyball, basketball, baseball, and more teams.

uci is division 1 in basketball? i thought they were in the big west league...

regardless they don't have football, which is by far the most popular college sport.

I believe big west is D1. Irvine was crazy in vball this year. Too bad they lost on the one game I went to.

"UCD: not academically recognized"

Dude what are you smokin? UCD is the flagship Vet school for the UC system, has the #1 school of ecology in the nation, has a highly recognized MBA program, has a highly regarded medical school etc. You really need a reality check.

okay, i should change my statement from not academically recognized to not academically compared to SD, LA and CAL.

so they have a #1 rank in a major thats small and not recognized, big whoop. I believe UCR has the #1 entomology program in the U.S... you don't see people toting that statistic.

Highly recongized MBA program?
its #46 according to business week but its under Irvine #38, anderson #10 and haas #7. Sure its good, but compared to the other UC's its not that great.

Highly regarded medical school
Again it falls short of LA, SD, I and Berkeley.

I'm not trying to discredit UCD, its a good school, but compared to the other UC's its in the middle of the pack.

You need to take my words into its context, sure i was unclear but its obvious that i was comparing UCD to the rest of the UC's.
