UCI or UCSB

Im planing on majoring in bio, then going to medical school. I really like UCSB the campus surrounding and everything, but I have no idea how good their bio program is, and they do not have a medical school. For UCI I hate the surrounding and I hate the school, but I like the idea that they have a medical school and a decent bio program. Does anyone know anything about UCSB that i should know?

wat about UCSD?

wat about UCSD? UCI has a more known bio program than UCSB but research UCSBs bio program

UCSB all the way!

UCSB!

Just because you go to a school that has a medical school, doesn't necessarily mean that will help you in getting into that medical school, since med school admissions is super competitive anyways.

I personally like UCSB a lot better than UCI (surroundings, atmosphere, etc) and I know it's bio program isn't that bad, and it also has research opportunities.

hmm, what are the acceptance rates into their med schools for each school....?

UCSD in 1997 4.9% overall (school breakdown in url for 1997)
http://home.sandiego.edu/~e_cook/vault/medical/sandiego/ucsd-med-97.html

UCSF in 1997 had 4.2% overall
http://home.sandiego.edu/~e_cook/vault/medical/sanfrancisco/ucsf-med-97.html

UCI 4.8% in 1997
http://home.sandiego.edu/~e_cook/vault/medical/irvine/uci-med-97.html

UCDavis 4.6% in 1997
http://home.sandiego.edu/~e_cook/vault/medical/davis/ucd-med-97.html

UCLA 3.7% in 1997
http://home.sandiego.edu/~e_cook/vault/medical/losangeles/ucla-med-97.html

I wanna know too cause I'm planning to probably major in bio and go to med school.
I heard UCI has better premed programs and research opportunities, but I need to hear some more opinions.

Irvine: chemistry and molecular and evolutionary biology
Santa Barbara: marine biology, engineering and physics

well I guess for pre-med, UCI would be better, even though UCSB is funner! haha

Even though UCI's bio is better, if you hate the school and the surroundings, you're gunna hate being there for 4 years. I go to UCI and I like it but not everyone does. For you, it sounds like UCSB would be better and if you get a high gpa and mcat, UCSB will serve you well. Good luck!

going to a school such as UCI and taking bio there doesnt mean u will get in for sure come on now

Which one is harder academically?

I'm making the same decision and I'm leaning toward UCSB. I hope the kids there are too drunk to be competition :P.

btw, I went to UCI admit day or something yestarday, and the school me some useful info:

44% acceptance rate into grad school for Bio majors
48% is national average
93% acceptance rate for people who have a 3.7 GPA and 10/10/10 on mcat scores
Students go to just about every med school, from hopkins to UCSF

I'm going to ucsb today. Hopefully, it'll give me some stats so we can compare xD

^^^Any new info yet?...

if you want to get into med school, do you have to major in science for undergraduate? i'd like to double major in women studies and another area (maybe science). how easy is it to change majors or add a major/minor in college anyways? does anyone know the answer?

illusionalhopes: no you don't need to major in science for med school. you can major in whatever you want, as long as you complete the core classes required for med school. i don't think it's that difficult to change majors or add majors/minors. you just need to talk to the department you're considering a major in and file a major change form or something. look at the specific UC web site, they should have more details.

ahhhh!! thanks so much. that's what i thought. another question, is it better to take a SAT II science for top tier schools?

illusionalhopes: well if you want to get into science, it will help (like engineering). otherwise, it doesn't really matter.

thanks. everything you said made me feel a lot better ^_^
