UCI v. UCSB

Hi so I've just been having some trouble deciding which college is better for me to attend for computer engineering.

UCI:
I got in for undeclared/undecided but after talking to admissions officers and counselors they all told me that transferring later on into computer engineering shouldn't be a problem. UCI is 10 minutes away so I would staying at home for my second, third, and fourth years to save up money.

UCSB:
I got into their computer engineering program directly but didn't get any financial aid. The atmosphere of UCSB is also really nice and hopefully I can get into their 5 year BS/MS program with hard work.

Overall, I just want to attend the school with the better program. Both atmospheres, although totally differenet, are okay with me.

Thanks!

UCI: yOu’d save money and wouldn’t have to wrry bout homesickness, but you wouldn’t rlly have “independence”, I guess. The area is also REALLY smart and high school kids in that area are on point. ^.^

UCSB: I don’t know much about this school, but if FA is a must, then this is a no.Also my sister attends USC and regularly complins about how “suiperficial” So. Cal is, “excluding Claremont McKenna,Harvey Mudd, And Caltech”.But when I visited it seemed perfectly fine, just rlly hot. I do have a feeling ppl hear can be kinda annoying though :|, but UCSB seems like a really great school in terms of academics.
Final Verdict: UC Irvine
NOTE" At the end of the day. it’s your choice. Chose where you can be comfortable, happy, and can LEARN.

Good Luck! And Congrats!

:D

Also, I see this is your first post, so welcome to CC! I hope you stay, there are a lot of ppl who only post a few comments and then never come on for years.

Well, it depends on what you value:
Affordability: UCI>UCSB
Social Life: UCI<ucsb studious="" atmosphere:="" uci="">UCSB
Computer Engineering: UCI<UCSB (going by rankings, at least)
Campus: UCI<UCSB (though I’d say this is pretty subjective)</ucsb>

You said you wanted the one with the best program, so that would probably be UCSB.

USC is probably going to be unusually superficial, as it’s an expensive private school in LA. I would not say the people there are representative of SoCal as a whole.

(I may be slightly biased on this post, as I recently had to choose between the two schools and ended up choosing UCSB. They’re both excellent universities, though, and either way, you should end up having a great college experience).

The programs are the same, for all intents and purposes. It would be harder to find 2 colleges more closely matched academically. They are part of the same system, they have similar class sizes, enrollment, quality of students enrolling, advising systems, faculty focus on research, etc, etc.

There are differences in outcomes and its due to what the student does. Get good grades, take part in student engineering clubs, get internships (a real key), get to know some profs if you want good recs for grad school. None of these depend on which school you attend.
