UCI vs. UCSC vs. UCSD

Okay so I didn't get accepted to Berkeley =(. Down to these three: UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Diego. Got accepted to all three as a junior transfer into the computer science and engineering major. Where should I go and why? Social life makes no difference to me; I will be able to get along with people/make friends anywhere I go.

You won’t have a social life with CS major. It’s a given. UCSD ranks higher than the other 2 UCs but I’ve looked at UCI course catalog and it seems excellent.

I’ve been taking 18-20 units a semester; did both differential equations and linear algebra in a summer quarter and still have had a social life the entire time. What you just said is entirely not true unless it takes you all of your free time to learn new things…

CS is very time consuming. It’s not just a math class. I try to limit myself to one CS per quarter. I want to do well.

Honestly, I’ve looked at my upper div requirements and it just doesn’t seem like that difficult of a major to me… Which is why I plan on majoring in math as well, forgot to say that in original post sorry. Anyways I just wanted to know which would be the best programs. Thank you for your input.

OP, if you are asking for the schools with the reputation/prestige in CS, it would go UCSD > UCI > UCSC. Overall academic reputation would be the same. All three schools are strong in CS, though.

Are you insane? This is just plain wrong. At first I thought you were joking…

Obviously CS is a challenging major/subject, but the difficulty level depends on the individual. Some may struggle, want good grades, and therefore sacrifice their social life. Others may not study much, have a great social, but still have decent grades because they can quickly absorb material. Others may have a good social life and a good amount of free time because they can manage their time well, are efficient at studying, etc. and so on and so on… you get the point.

“Social life” is way too variable and individual for you to make rash statement like “CS major = no social life, guaranteed.”

If you dont care about social life

UCSD>UCI>UCSC

UCSD and UCI are both good.
UCSC is not known for engineering/CS.

Not joking. Engineering/CS are very time consuming and I plan to have very high GPA so I can apply to graduate school. My sister’s best friend graduate from engineering school in 5-year because it’s hard, had to repeat a couple courses. 2 of her friends got rescinded from Trustee scholarships because their GPA falls below 3.0. One got GPA so low that he was not qualify for the BS/MD program( which is incredibly hard to be accepted into any college freshman year). None of these students were the kind that partying a lot either.
It’s true that it depends on the person but I won’t know that until I finish the first year.

Sumbitted my SIR to UCSD. Looks like, on average, it’s a little bit warmer down in La Jolla than Irvine and Santa Cruz seems to get a lot more rain than the other two.

OMG are you me?! I got accepted to UCSD, UCSC, and UCI as well and just got rejected from UCB yesterday. I am also a computer science major

LOL. I got rejected from UCB yesterday as well (obviously, otherwise I would not make this thread). Well, are you going to attend UCSD?

I am thinking about it, friend. It is my top choice right now. Would you be interested in staying off campus? :)

I think I will be staying on campus… Seems like it will be more convenient.

Just curious, what did you both decide to do? UCI vs. UCSD? I have a friend who is also making that decision…
