UCLA Accounting

Hello everyone,

I'm in my third year at UCLA, and my ultimate goal is to become a CPA. My GPA is not stellar, and I highly doubt I will get into the Accounting minor. I just failed my first class ever, and it was a class I took with Klein, so this whole Accounting minor talk just kind of gets me down and frustrates me.

I have a parttime job in accounting, and I've managed to land an interview this March at an accounting firm back home. I'm on top of career-oriented things, I'm just really struggling with the classes.

I guess what I'm wondering is if there's anyone else out there that is doing the path I'm doing, or already has done the path I'm on...not in the minor but still pushing through all the classes? And if so what your experiences have been/were with the more difficult accounting professors, and if you failed any classes, etc.

Thanks for any input!

Have you considered fulfilling the CPA classes at a reputable community college such as SMC? Santa Monica College, which happens to be close to UCLA, offers all the classes that you need in order to sit for the CPA exam. Take a look at this link http://www.smc.edu/projects/26/Major_Sheets_for_AA_Degree/accounting_aa.pdf</a> (look at the bottom of the second page). Most of the CPA classes are offered online.

UCLA does allow a repeat, but my guess is that you are not yet in the minor for which you need at least a 3.2 to apply. Most people that get into the minor have around a 3.5 on average. If you think that you won’t be able to comply with all of this, then stop stressing out, and finish the classes for your major. Since the classes at SMC are offered online, you can finish the accounting classes from smc while you finish your B.A or B.S at UCLA.
What’s ur major at UCLA anyways?

I basically did your path, minus the fail. I basically waited until my GPA was semi decent before applying. I basically applied for the minor with literally one class before completing the minor. So I went through all the classes before getting into the minor. It’s fine.

My GPA was not stellar by any means, but it might have helped that I was one class away from finishing the minor. They probably just figured to give it to me since I was basically done.

How did you get into all the classes you needed to essentially finish the minor without being in? Were you a declared Business Econ major?

There are no restrictions for the accounting courses. The only restriction is that people without the minor have to wait until 2nd pass before enrolling. This wasn’t an issue as I was able to enroll in all classes I wanted even starting from 2nd pass. This might not be the case now as budget cuts might have hit the program, but I’m not sure about that.

If I didn’t start taking 1A and 1B until my 3rd year, would it be possible to fit the other 8 classes into 4 quarters (Spring + Senior year)?

I believe you can.

I started 1A and 1B at the exact same time (fall and winter) and I could finish. It might be a bit packed (2 or maybe 3 if needed accounting course per semester), but doable.

Hi Altema,

I think I am on the same path as you and the OP. If you don’t mind, could you tell me when you applied for the minor? Since my GPA is not so great right now, I probably be able to apply until my senior year maybe winter quarter or even spring lol :stuck_out_tongue: But it’s reassuring to know that you can apply for it after you essentially finish the classes!
