Alright, I'm a math major. And I made a huge upward trend my third year of community college. I don't really want to stay in community college for a fourth year. But the major I'm in I don't know if they'll really look into taking me. My GPA went like this throughout the years: 3.6, 2.89, 2.75, 2.93, 3.1, 3.3, 3.5.

Basically, I wrote a long list of all my classes until it logged me out and deleted my post. Lol. But I'll just write the classes worth looking at for now.

Calculus I: C
Calculus I: C
Calculus III: A
Differential Equations: C
Physics 110: B
Physics 120 (credit by examination): A
Physics 211: A
C Programming: A
Linear Algebra: A

I took intro courses in Group Theory and Number Theory as well online, but they weren't worth college credit. I didn't work for the school or anything, but I tutored people in Calculus and Physics and they got A's. I have TAP. I figured having a 3.3 + TAP last year wouldn't have given me any chance at getting admitted into UCLA last year. Do you think that was true? Or maybe just wishful thinking on my part that I may have gotten in? But I'm at a 3.5 right now. I'm also very interested in UC Davis. I've done all I can for my math major, I think. I've been considering enlisting into the Air Force since I work at a gas station right now. :/

Just apply and see what happens. If you don’t get in, then I would just go to another UC.

Your situation isn’t that bad, I wouldn’t consider the air force just yet. It is not like you can’t get into A school. Your career doesn’t end just because you didn’t get into UCLA.

If you’re very interested in UC Davis as well, I think you should TAG to Davis and apply to UCLA. That way if you don’t get into to LA you still have a spot at Davis.

Going to UCLA isn’t as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be.
Though I do wish you luck if it’s your dream and it is still a possibility, open your mind to other schools. You’ve had the motivation to raise your gpa, I’m sure you’ll do great anywhere.

EC’s And a good personal statement and tap if you’re eligible should give you a good chance.

As others have said, TAG for UC Davis if it’s your 2nd choice, and of course apply to UCLA. Since you have TAP and pre-reqs done (?) for your desired major, that is a BIG boost to your chances for LA.

Assuming that Calculus I, II and III were 4 units apeice and Differential Equations and Linear Algebra were each 3 units, and these are all the Math classes you have taken or can take at your CCC, you have a Math GPA of 2.78. That would not be a problem if you were a Communications major but it is a major problem if you are applying to UCLA, or any other UC except Merced, as a Math major. Those three Cs you got are really pulling your Math GPA down but since a C is considered an acceptable passing grade you can not retake those courses for a higher grade and since the three semesters of Calculus and DE and LA are the only university level Math classes that CCCs generally offer it is hard to see how you are going to be able to do anything to raise your Math GPA.

It is unfortunate that you could not get credit for the online Math classes you took but if you are not too far from a UC or CSU campus there is the possibility of taking upper division Math classes through Cross Registration at one of those schools. You will have to first see if taking classes at a four year university will have any adverse effects on your standing as a CCC student when applying to transfer.

Another option is to switch your major to Physics since you have over a 3.5 GPA in the Physics classes you have taken. The only problem is that Physics majors are generally expected to have very strong Math, as well as Physics, GPAs. Despite being weighed down by a 2.78 GPA in all of those Math classes you have taken, to have a current overall GPA of 3.5 there must be some courses you have been doing very well in and one of them might be something you can major in so you will be a viable candidate for transfer to a four year college or university. The reality is you are now going on your fourth year at a CCC with little prospect of ever transferring to a UC, or even a CSU, as a Math major. It is time to consider other options.

I talked to one of the faculty advisors for the math department and several admissions officers a couple of weeks ago at a departmental fair for STEM students. They told us that applications for their major, being in L&S and non-impacted, will be considered by the department as long as they’re above the L&S GPA cutoff (I think it’s a 3.0 cumulative for L&S in general - she didn’t say anything about major GPA, and I’m not sure it matters). One kid was worried because his cum was low (lower than yours), and she said to explain it in their essay, and that they look for people who are genuinely passionate about math, even if their GPA is lacking.

So yeah, I think you definitely have a great shot at UCLA, especially with TAP. Try getting involved in their STOMP program as well - they have a conference every year. UCLA has a ton of transfer programs you can participate in. You can even call the math department, speak to an advisor, and make an appointment to go in and see them. Their math department is awesome, and surprisingly responsive.
