UCLA and extracurriculars

Hi.

I attend Santa Monica College and I'm in the Scholars program(It's a TAP program). My GPA as of now is 4.0. What I wonder is if UCLA cares much about the extracurricular activities of a community college transfer. How important are extracurricular activities to UCLA?

If I'm TAP-certified in the future with a 3.7 or 3.8 GPA(It seems likely that I'll have a GPA in that range by the time I apply to transfer), is there still a good chance that I will be rejected because I have valuable extracurricular activities to mention in my application? I'm majoring in history, and it's a little hard to get an internship with the local history museums and there isn't a history club at my school(I'm not even sure if I can successfully start one), so I'm not sure if I will have valuable extracurricular activities to mention on my application when it's time to apply.

They want you to have not just extracurriculars, but anything that shows that you’re a leader of some sort. You need to show that you have other strong interests besides just school, and being a regular member of a club doesn’t really show that. An officer position in a club helps, and it doesn’t even have to be necessarily related to your major, although having major-related extracurriculars would help a ton. Don’t just join a bunch of clubs because you want to write them down on your application, show them leadership and passion.

ECs don’t matter much for UCLA. I had a 3.8 when I applied and was accepted for History. I knew students who got into History with 3.5’s. Although History and English are technically impacted at UCLA, they are easier to get into than other impacted majors like Psychology, Communications, and Economics. Don’t worry about ECs. Focus on keeping your GPA high and completing all of your pre-requisites (along with IGETC).

I agree with laforlife. it’s seems like admission is mainly gpa and pre req completion based as a transfer student. comparing a 3.8
with lots of ecs and a 4.0 with little to no ecs. I had a couple friends who got in with the 4.0 with little ecs and the other ones with a 3.8 denied.

I see.

Thanks a lot for the information, guys!

I’ll still try to see if I can obtain an internship with a local history museum or something, but now I’ll only do it for the work experience. I’ve heard that UCLA doesn’t care too much about EC’s, but I just wanted to make sure that was true.

Thanks again for the info, guys.
