I was recently admitted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Michigan's Honors Program and UCLA, and I have no clue which one to pick!

I plan on majoring in something math or science oriented and hopefully move on to medical school. I didn't get financial aid at any school, but I get reciprocity to Madison as a resident of Minnesota (so its around 20 grand a year). I love Michigan and UCLA, but is it worth it to pay 25 grand a year extra to go there? Are any of these schools in a different tier than the others?

Certainly UCLA and Michigan are higher status schools but I can think of 100,000 reasons why to choose UW-Madison. No contest, but I am a value guy.

Others may pipe in about the opportunities that may await UCLA or Michigan graduates. But I think most fair-minded posters will agree that if you do great at any top 50 school, opportunities will abound.

It seems odd you got into Michigan’s honors program but not UW-Madison’s …

Honestly I think Wisconsin is highly underrated and on par with UCLA and Michigan. I would save the 100K and go to Madison. That is a GREAT opportunity to pay instate fees!

yea, its just that I don’t want to go to school with 25 people from my graduating class…people respond to you getting into madison with a “sweet,” but if you tell them you are going to ucla or michigan, they respond with a “holy s***!”

So am I just biased in the fact that I’m so close to Madison and I take it for granted?

First of all, Wisconsin has a zillion people, I PROMISE you, you can hide from your classmates haha. I went to a state U with a smaller population and with an equal number of people attending and I saw like one guy rarely and have no clue what happened to the others.

2nd, yeah man you Big 10-ites remind me of UC kids (who are obsessed with Cal and UCLA), you have no clue how blessed you are. You are all about Michgan and Northwestern when IMO Wisconsin is right there with Michigan and UCLA academically. From an outside of the MW perspective, I would put Madison right there and it is a great town on top of that.

I agree. I know some people I have been attending the same school with so long ( high school is long enough) so finally ending that trend really may make a new feeling. I see what your talking about.

heyyyy you’re not alone…
im also deciding between UCLA/Michigan!
Both schools are great; both have their pros and cons…I’m stuck. >.<
I think the final decision is going to depend on the FA package, at least, for me~

Go to Wisc. My kids both go to big state u’s with where lots of students from their high school (and the other high sch. in town) attend. It is not a prob. S1, a sr. told me just last night that he rarely sees anyone from our town at college (unless he wants to). Also, while you’re in h.s. it’s easy to think you never want to see a familiar face again but once in college (esp. as a new freshman) it’s really not so bad to see someone you know walking to class.

alright thanks! that helps a lot…I was also waitlisted at Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame. If I were to get in to one of these schools in june off the waitlist (which is highly unlikely), would spending the extra money be worth it then?

In sciences especially UW does not take a backseat to UM or UCLA. There is more science research and groundbreaking work going on UW than at the others. Which school had a science prof named Time magazine man of the year?
