Would greatly appreciate words of insight into the anthropology major, specifically at UCLA.
I am a CCC student currently applying for UC schools and am very perplexed on whether to choose Anth or Soc as my major. Anthropology is genuinely interesting to me, equal to Sociology in my mind. It looks like Anth and Soc (specifically @ UCLA) offer very similar courses.
What I’d like to do w/ my major is help society – not sure what that’ll be as of now, but am leaning towards counseling, government, etc… (In the case that I do pursue Anth as my major, I would focus on the society/culture part of it.) I definitely will be going to grad school to specialize in something. My assumption is that Sociology will give me a wider umbrella to explore topics, but I’ve heard on this site that Anth (at UCLA) covers much more than Soc does.
UCLA is definitely where I wanna be, compared to the other UC’s. Sociology is such a popular major there, so it might be harder to get in b/c of that (I’m not considering Anth because it could get me in. It’s a major I would very much enjoy). I like to stay away from what the masses are doing, and it seems Anthropology is not as popular, which is nice personally. It just seems that to study Anth means to be an archaeologist or professor, neither of which I’m interested in.
If any of y’all are current/past soc or anth majors, what’s your opinion on this? Does it not matter since I’m going to grad school? Should I stay away from Anth if I’m not looking to follow the typical anthropology career?
THANK YOU!!!
