Hi, I don't post very often on these boards but I'm just looking for any advice at all. I applied to UCLA's Biz Econ program and was rejected and I honestly did my very best +20%. I completed 60 units one year, stayed EXTREMELY invovled in EC's, wrote pretty great essays, and even managed to get invited to Regents.

My stats were...
GPA 3.74
TAP, IGETC, Pre-Reqs completed (or in progress)
FA/Document Tracking were up.

Leaving for USMC this summer for 92 day program. That pretty much means I'll be going to boot camp this summer, coming back for school, go to officer canidate school next summer, and then enlisting if I choose to as 2nd Lit after my bachelor's.

The EC's I was invovled with include Youth and Government, a statewide mock legislative and court (roughly 2000 kids run the capital for 5 days) as participant and intern, model united intern (same thing but for middle school), working on short films for a small production company run by a guy who was nominated for an oscar in 1994, working on AFI thesis film, fashion design intern, won a bunch of awards in HS for broadcast/news, and some other stuff than just isn't coming to mind at this moment.

I called the admissions counselor and the FAO and they both just said that it was unforunate and that Biz Econ was very very competitive and nothing in specific stopped from admission.
The only two B's I recieved were during my first semester in Calc 1 and Physics 6.

Currently, I'm working on 3 prereqs but I have 90%+ in each of them and the rest of my classes too.
I was thinking about writing my appeal about how in HS I was really big "f" up and didn't really see any point in life and than a turn of events during my senior year really changed my perspective on life and I just wasn't familiar with studying in school.

It sounds a tad superficial here but there is a lot more of that I just won't go into deep detail.
Any suggestions?

Forgive me…what I read was you applied to UCLA as a transfer student, you were offered a Regents Scholarship with UCLA, but you were not accepted to UCLA…or you were offered acceptance into UCLA-but not as a biz econ major…I am guessing you were referring to the latter…if so-CONGRATULATIONS, however, an appeal may be the only way you will be able to attend UCLA and earn a degree in business economics. Otherwise, you can accept the offer to attend UCLA, but earn a different degree.

Unfortunately, the chances of an appeal actually going through is very slim, especially for Biz Econ. The FAO is pretty much dead on that it was really competitive this year and a lot of qualified applicants were turned down. Unless you can provide new and truly compelling information, it probably isn’t worth going through.

I do find it odd though that you were offered Regents yet was still turned down. I figured an invite almost surely meant an acceptance, and they must’ve thought you were a good fit for the school if you have less than a 4.0.

I remember a girl that used to post here that had the same thing happen. She was a Comm major, got a Regents invite and was rejected. I think that she went to USC. I can’t remember her name for the life of me.

Whatasunnyday-I’m really sorry that you were rejected. You sound like an amazing candidate. Did you talk about your military plans in your personal statement? If not, I would definitely recommend putting that info in your appeal. I think that it shows a lot of drive and motivation to do something like that and UCLA is the type of school that wants students that posses those qualities. Do you have any previous work experience that you didn’t talk about? Maybe presenting them with some work experience in the business world would help. Good luck.

Thanks for the immediate replies…
Apol, I was not admitted to UCLA in any form but I was invited to the Regent Scholarship.

Game Theory, I believed the same thing. In many ways, I did not anticpate the rejection by anymeans.

kc_sunshine, I did talk about it in the additional comments area of the PE. I wrote quite an extensive essay as to why I wanted to join and what it would do for me as a person. I recently went to ATHGO Global Clean Technology: Case for Green Busienss at UCLA and did not think much to include that in the appeal so I apperciate the idea.

Right now, the only way I can consider attacking this appeal is by showing why I go those two B’s and having one of the letter of recs written by the calculus teacher and the other by a college professor/high school professor I had who saw my change in state of mind.

Why is that such a downside? Isn’t great that I was able to complete all the pre-reqs and classes in one year? Why 3 prereqs being work in progress hold me back? I have no additional classes to take next year, what so ever.

From what I know, prereqs in progress don’t hurt you. Not sure if there’s anything new someone can say, so my advice is it to just appeal and hope for the best.
