UCLA Chem Majors: Tell Me About It

hey, i'm a chem transfer and i've searched everywhere (hasty google search) but nothing really caught my eye about the chem department.

what do you all think of it? so far i've just heard that it smells funny

anything i should know (hurr hurr the periodic table)?

The Chem major is really small. I know only know of one person in it.

I'm a transfer on a Regents scholarship finishing up my very 1st year. My last quarter will be this coming Fall 2008 quarter. You should be able to finish 5 quarters minimum without having to take any summer classes, that is if you completed all lower divison requirements for the major at your CC prior to matriculating. If you haven't completed all the requisites, along with lab components, I highly suggest you do so since the department most likely will make you take additional classes because semester based Chem CC coursework doesn't entirely overlap with UCLA's quarter system Chem. A friend, also doing the major, didn't listen and she's going to take 7 quarters to finish. That's >6K down the drain if you aren't on a full scholarship.

Oh yeah, if you're motivated, take advantage of those funded undegrad research grants/proposals. I did and I'll be pocketing close to 8K by the time I finish. Scholarship + grant $s + no educational debt = FTMFW.

Make an appointment to meet with a departmental undergrad advisor (I think Denise Mantonya (sp?) is one of them) to figure out what classes you'll be allowed to enroll into for Fall 2008. Bring a CC transcript copy, UCLA acceptance letter and your current CC class schedule so the advisor knows exactly what classes you've completed, currently taking and mention if you're planning to take summer classes, if at all.

Ideally, you should enroll into Chem 171, Chem 110A, Biochem 153A and a non-science GE class for Fall 2008. You'll do well if you have a good foundation in General Chemistry and Physics Thermodynamics. I myself didn't need to take Biochem 153A/L as I already fulfilled the class and lab requirement prior to matriculating in Fall 2007.

Good luck.
