UCLA CLASS OF 2021 APPLICANT THREAD

@UCLAstan One thing I’m confused about, however, is someone with higher test scores AND GPA than me, and they didn’t get the e-mail. How does that make sense?

@VenomBuds yeah not sure about that maybe they lied to you jk an outlier I guess theres always bugs when they try to do things through a selective automated system. kind of like the sorority rush algorithm some people slip through the cracks.

the great thing tho is you don’t need the email to apply to it. the email is meaningless truly.

@UCLAstan I don’t know if that’s true. I think they do give more importance to the unweighted gpa because my gpa is kind of low but my SAT score is high, and I didnt get an email.

I also got the alumni scholarship invite ( I am mostly posting this so I get notifications from this thread).

ohhh ok ok thank you!

I think it might have something to do with that one page on the UC app where you pick up to 16 scholarship types you feel you apply to. So they pick the top stat kids who also clicked a specific selection of boxes, and that accounts for how all the ones who got the email had high-ish stats but not everyone with high-ish stats got the email. It also explains the loose corralation with admissions.

Is regents notification being sent out tomorrow?

@johnlimster oh gosh so soon? where did you find out that information from? :-S

Just because Regents came out on one day one year doesn’t mean it will be the same every year. I think notifications won’t come out until after supplements are due.

@LindsayHarvard And why’s that? For that past five years at least they have been released before Feb 3.

Also I don’t think your guess as to why some received the alumni email and some didn’t is correct. I checked 0 scholarships as did my friends, some who have higher SAT and GPA than me, and I received it and they didn’t. Thus the scholarship checking variable is essentially a standardized one, so it seems pretty clear that can’t be the reason.

@VenomBuds This is also the year they’ve received the most applications. I think it might take more time. Then what do you think was the reasoning/method for the mailing list?

This happens every year. No use speculating. Just relax and enjoy senior year. No matter what you do now it won’t change anything. High school is a stage you will never get to experience again. Make the most of these last few months. You’ll find out soon enough where you get admitted

Hi guys! I’m a current UCLA student (2020), and would love to help answer any of your questions. I’ve read through the past couple posts and it seems that the debate regarding the alumni scholars email has started up again (last years page went through the same thing!).
Here is my insight on the issue:
Some background info - I’m an OOS student in L&S and was invited to apply. From the ~40 kids who applied to UCLA, I think only ~5 of us were invited to apply, and I was one of two admitted from this batch of applicants (3 people who were invited got rejected). However, 2 more kids were admitted who hadn’t revived this email. So based on this, I think getting the email is a good sign considering that it’s sent to a select few, but it is not a good indicator of admittence. On the other hand, not getting the email does mean that you are any less likely to be admitted.
I know it’s cliche advice but please do not get stressed out about this. This email is definitely not an accurate predictor of your admission! At the end of the day, it’s human beings who make a decision on your application, not some system that sorts you by your stats.
That being said, good luck to you all! Feel free to message me any of your questions, I will start to beocme more active now that the page seems to be picking up.

@bruin2020 even though the alumni scholarship email is just based of stats and isn’t a indicator of admittance, is it still a positive sign to get the email?

Any international got the alumni scholar email

Haha I should have checked this thread before I started the alumni scholarship thread.
I know people who didn’t get in UCLA but got in Berkeley or even Stanford! So good luck everyone!

Knowing my kid’s stats, I have a hard time believing they send the alumni scholarship invites out only based on stats.

@youcee Your kid’s stats aren’t good? Is his/her ec’s maybe unique??

RE: applicants who have received the " UCLA Alumni Scholarship" application via email. While our son received this email and has excellent stats, after looking back at his UC application, I believe it has more to do with one of the categories he selected to be considered under the “Scholarships” area of the UC application. Go back and review your application and maybe you will see which category may have caused this email to be generated. Just my 2 cents.

@JuicyMango No, the opposite. High stats, maybe not unique enough ECs.
