o m g ucla is my dream school <3 i wish every1 good luck in dis process!!! luv corgis!!!
Curious, do UCs use the GPA that they calculate themselves?? (where they only accept up to 8 official honors/AP courses as extra points)
Thank you all for all the useful info.!!
I know many are talking (mostly) about Regents/Alum. scholarship apps currently (and good luck with those!), but I have a different question:
I know @10s4life says CS is an “impacted major” and I was wondering whether or not you feel or know whether Life Science majors such as biology are also “impacted” at ucla, and also, a related question, by “impacted” does this mean just harder to get into that major (due to high demand for it) and/or is it also harder to graduate within 4 years, with an “impacted” major, due to for example difficulty in getting into all the required courses that are in high demand, in time? ( --And this is, assuming I wouldn’t have any pre-enrollment for classes privilege on basis of something like Regents … I mean, I have heard of 1st pass and 2nd pass though, when enrolling for courses, though for a regular student, I’ve heard with first pass, you get to pick/enroll in 2 classes.) Thanks in advance for all your input !!
@10s4life Bruin Day is on April 15 this year. If the Engineering open house is the day after, that would put it on Easter. Do you think they might do something different this year because of that?
Received the alumni scholarship email but not the Regents one (I’m in-state).
Nothing unusual re. my GPA/SAT stats, but I did talk about (have) leadership experience in my UC Ap.
Regents email is harder to get. Almost a lock to get in if you receive it.
@HSSeniorBiol What makes CS and Life Sci majors different is that CS is in HSSEAS which is another story. For Life Sci majors they require a min GPA to declare once you are a student. You’ll be admitted to UCLA L&S with a pre major designation so you know what classes to take. If a major is “impacted” i.e. comm studies then it is harder to declare it once you are a student. I think Bio is relatively easy to declare. The more competitive ones are neuro, computation Bio, and mimg and mcdb. In terms of classes it isn’t hard to get classes it’s hard to get good times and professors. First pass is 10 units (basically 2 classes). It really isn’t that bad.
@youcee it might land on Easter. It’s historically been the day after since everyone travels (sometimes a long ways away) to bruin day. It’s a very well put together event and really shows the resources of the school of engineering.
@10s4life You said CS is a whole different story. I was just curious what you meant by that.
Has any out of state applicants get either the Regents or Fast track emails ?
@ETH2355 Basically because CS is in HSSEAS that’s what makes it different. More specifically HSSEAS does not use the same “formula” / review for admissions unlike L&S. If you like I can PM you the details. In short it is a special numerical system used by engineering admissions.
@10s4life Yea, if you cold PM me that information that would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks @10s4life … So it looks like, as a pre-biology major, (and hopeful pre-med) I’ll probably be able to get into two important impacted (large, introductory, prerequisite) classes (intro. biology for sci. majors, and intro. chemistry) during first pass … but then for calculus BC (I know there are two diff. ones for that, depending on level and goals) but I was wondering if calc. BC in gen’l is also one of those large introductory classes that fills up … and if so do you happen to know if they allow some overflow students to take it at the nearby CC (SMC) as a concurrent enrollment? Vs. would I perhaps just not get an optimal time of day, at UCLA, if trying to get calc. BC not until 2nd pass (during class sign-up, 2nd pass, that is). Thanks!!
@HSSeniorBiol Haha don’t worry about enrollment until you get admitted. No use worrying about class selection before decisions come out. During orientation which is 3 days they will explain everything major speciffic. You’ll be in small groups based by major and learn about campus life, courses, academic tips, and enroll in your first 3 classes. You can take a 4th but it must be a fiat lux or seminar. Most life sci majors take the LS math series which isn’t traditional calc. It’s a blend of coding, math, and stats. If you take “traditional calc” you will take the 3 series if life sci 31 series if physical science. Really not too much of a difference. You’ll be able to get classes. They have enough space for you. Be flexible with professors and time slots and you won’t have to worry.
Anyone who started writing the alumni scholarship application essays yet? anyone have time to give me a little advice?
@10s4life so for a CS major is it a lot harder to get in than for L&S, and for the formula you mentioned do you need to get a certain number on it or something?
@coffee1999 Oh yeah CS is way harder to get into. The pro is once admitted you are in the major. I.e. C’s will get you a degree lol. I’ll PM you the details. For fall 2016 the median UW GPA for Admitted CS students and for almost every single engineering major in general was a 4.0. Crazy right?
I received an email from UCLA about the Supplemental Information Request. Is this a good sign? What is your interpretation of this? (I submitted my essay responses and my fall semester senior grades) Thanks.
@BluDawgs it means you’re borderline and they need more info for a decision.
@BluDawgs
they need more info to make decision for processing…maybe you are maybes applicant.
@sadsenior My D filled out the UCLA Alumni Scholarship form. Where is info about the essays? I thought she would get a response for a second part of that. Thanks…
