Also I want to address the misconception regarding the alumni scholar invite. The admit rate is not anywhere close to 70%. I personally know a handful of people who did not get admitted even though they had received the invite. If I were to make an approximation (something that is very difficult to do without knowing the exact procedures), I would say the invite is around a 50%, maybe slightly higher, prediction of admittence. The alumni scholars association does not have any communication with the admission process other than the initial data sent to the alumni scholars association by undergraduate admissions. Good luck!
@bruin2020 wait but doesn’t it still mean that the admissions officers gave the top scores/gpas to the alumni scholarship committee? also in past threads a member of the alumni scholarship committee said the admit rate was 70-80%
Yes, they do. I saw that thread too last year, and if I remember correctly it was back in 2012 or 2013. Since then the number of students who have applied to UCLA has grown by a lot, that’s why I estimated the admit rate to be around 50% (also along with personal experiences).
@bruin2020 is right on alumni scholar rates. With the thread being old and the increase in applicants 50% seems right. Also back then it was a 60% correlation to being admitted. It was never 70-80.
I only got one email about the Alumni scholarship, and that was the invite is that a bad sign?
Not meant to be a rant or hit to anyone at all, however many of these REPEATING QUESTIONS can be answered by reading back into the forum, and can keep it from being redundant. Also, many people have helpful and insightful answers that may not be viewing the thread regularly. Just a suggestion, especially when concerning alumni scholarships / info @coffee1999 not aimed at you at all, this is super
general but especially for your question. Read back. Many people have given great answers and there are helpful conversations in previous pages. :-c
@nduclaunc I was only asking because other people received two emails, but no one said anything about only receiving one email. I wasn’t trying to have a repetitive question.
@coffee1999 not trying to point you out at all, anyone is free to ask or say whatever. Just merely suggesting for the benefit of all to this thread
And from what I read from others on this thread, being invited to alumni scholars invite is a good sign. However, not at automatic indicator of acceptance. Prob 50% chance. And as for only getting one email, that could be for a number of circumstances. I wouldn’t worry. The email is a good sign in general.
That’s interesting that some got only one email, which invited them to apply for the alumni scholarship, and others got two emails, with the second one being a reminder to apply. Maybe they only remind the portion with the highest stats? In that case one might worry that their stats were not as competitive as they thought. On the other hand, maybe there could have been a few mistakes here and there in which the list of those who already submitted an application got confused with the list of those who haven’t?
@BunnyBlue when others got the other email I already applied so that might be why I only got one, but I thought they were just sent off a mailing list which is why I was curious
do you think that if i got the alumni scholarship email and feel very good about my ECs then one reason I might not get in is beause I am out of state? I was reading something in the news about UCs trying to keep the out of state students to be around 20%. could being out of state hurt me then? even if i have the stats (received 2 alumni scholarship emails) and ECs?
@coffee1999 Lol !!! You already applied. That pretty much explains why you didn’t get a reminder to apply. Definitely not a bad sign for you. Just a sign that the Alumni are good at keeping track of things.
I looked through this thread but didn’t seem to get a clear idea of the most likely day we’ll here admissions decisions. Does anyone have anymore insight?
@tem339 Mar. 17 is the estimated date… Last year it was the 18th
Will all the acceptance/rejection notices go out at the same time or in waves?
The notices all go out at once I believe. My school’s regional UCLA admissions officer (I go to school not far from UCLA) came to visit us this past fall and told us that the admissions office likes to release decisions on Friday evenings. That way, they can go away for the weekend and avoid the angry phone calls they get from rejected applicants. She said they have to deal with a lot of parents asking them to change their child’s decision.
Does UCLA admit by major or is it similar to UCSD?
@voltthorn "UCLA is among the most selective universities in the country and is becoming more competitive for freshman applicants each year. This past year (Fall Quarter 2016) UCLA received more than 97,000 applications. Generally the campus is able to admit about one in five freshman applicants for the fall term.
For the College of Letters and Science, the applicant’s major is not considered during the review process. The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science admits students by declared major, with more emphasis on science and math programs. The School of Nursing also places more emphasis on science and math programs and requires the submission of an additional supplemental application. The School of the Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; and the School of Theater, Film and Television admit students by declared major (within the school), and put more emphasis on special talents through a review of portfolios and/or auditions, which are the most significant admission factors for these schools."

Ah there go my chances of getting in for CS in the School of Engineering and Applied Science
Same, I’m very worried about getting in for CS
