@uclaparent9 As a regents scholar for your daughter, was it easier to get opportunities for lab research and shadowing, or even entry into clubs and internships?
^ Yes it was much easier especially if your stats (SAT…) support your qualification. My daughter got lab research position starting her second quarter. As a result, her name is on many research papers or abstracts (>15).
(The team she has been working with is very productive and resourceful!)
Also with your impressive stats you can get shadowing easily as was the case with my daughter. She is a member of many clubs perhaps more than 6 …some very prestigious (beside the Regents’ club which is obviously the most prestigious among about 1000 clubs in UCLA).
@uclaparent9 Wow I didn’t know that high school stats still mattered in college! Did your daughter put her scores and GPA on her resume/CV? Are labs really so willing to give positions to freshmen regents scholars with no prior lab experience?
@peonyplant Hey, I interviewed for the Alumni Scholarship a few days ago and have also not yet received notification (I don’t think my interview went well, but I was also expecting a pretty immediate result based on last year’s thread)
@Darius13 how was the interview? Any advice? I have mine this week.
@college2022c Mine was about ten minutes long and they asked me five questions. It was online for me.
Does anyone know when we have to claim Cal Grant using wg4s portal? It’s been listed on my provisional award letter but we have to claim the award to receive it right?
@ToUSAfromINDIA: you said “I saw the cost of living in California under $20,000 per annum and income tax also $20,000 per year. I am basing all my predictions on these figures. Are they reasonable or an underestimate?”
VERY UNREASONABLE. It is not possible to live on $20,000 per year in any of the areas where you would be able to get a high-paying job. In Silicon Valley, you’ll be paying that much just in rent alone – and rents are going higher and higher all the time.

@ToUSAfromINDIA I agree with @dustypig and others. I don’t know where you are getting your figures from but I WISH you could live on $20k in California! I think those numbers are not reliable at all.
FYI - There is a thread dedicated to Bruin Day so if you have any questions or have experienced it post there.
@college2022c the interviewers aren’t very responsive to what you say (they sounded very neutral in my interview) so don’t be deterred if it feels a bit awkward or not fluid. You’ll do amazing
Have you looked into UCLA scholarships? There are a ton of scholarships for specific needs, and I personally applied for and received a hefty UCLA merit-based donor scholarship of $8k a year, renewable for 4 years. Here’s a link to the donor scholarship website: http://www.scholarshipcenter.ucla.edu/src-donor-scholarships/first-year-students/
@thisisblife Wow that’s amazing, congrats!!
It seems like most of the scholarships are for students with financial need. How would your student know if they are in that category. My daughter does not qualify for any “free” aid, but we could definitely use the help with 2 overlapping college bills next year.
Any internationals get their acceptance package yet???
@10s4life - my d has been admitted to UCLA.( Yeaaaa. It’s her dream school). She will be attending bruins day as well. She got 2 missed calls from ucla student call center today. She called them back and left a message. Do you know what it’s about?
@Pptodds Congrats! It’s just a student calling to encourage your daughter to commit and answer any questions she may have.
@10s4life - what a nice gesture. Another reason to love #bruins. Thank you
