UCLA Class of 2022 - Applicant Thread

@jalapeno99 i didd :slight_smile:

@10s4life hiiii theree i was just curious about UCLA’s career servicee… Since I am an international student and its really expensive to attend, do u think that the possible job opportunities I could receive after graduating would be worth the tuition?? I am really worried about the career opportunities hehe and do u think its possible to apply for any type of aid after freshman year? thank youu

@10s4life, Thx for your informative post on UCLA forum. Much appreciated. I have few specific questions on CS major at UCLA.
Whats the typical class sizes for CS major in HSSEAS? Is it larger than Berkeley?
Do you have any data point/report on 2018 CS students profile? Like, how many applied, how many admitted, avg sat/gpa/test scores, etc?
Is it possible to complete grad school 1 or 2 quarter earlier with help from AP credits from HS?
DS got into some good school including UCLA for CS major. BTW, we will be visiting UCLA campus during Bruin day and engg day.

@Z133eeeee Congrats! UCLA has amazing career fairs and an entire building dedicated for career services. Some things to consider is generally a bachelors degree is not worth a lot of debt. Any kind of “raises” you get for your first job associated with the prestige/quality of UCLA is not worth having 40k+ in loans. Also as an international student you cannot expect to work long term in the United States after graduating without undergoing the long and complicated H1B visa program. Most if not all internships are also usually open for US citizens or US permanent residents as well. Just something to keep in mind.

@WCbound Congrats on your son getting into CS. Thats impressive. Intro CS courses that everyone takes are around 170 students which is much smaller than Cal. If your son is CS letters and science at Cal know that he is not in the major yet and needs to apply in while at ucla he is already a CS major. 2018 data has not been fully compiled yet but the acceptance rate should be in the upper single digits range. For almost all engineering schools AP credits won’t get you very far. You can graduate maybe one quarter early but that requires taking a lot of classes per quarter and usually doesn’t work out anyways because classes are offered in series. Bruin day and Discover engineering day are great events and should help you solidify your decision. At a certain point you can only learn so much in undergrad so a cs course at MIT vs UCLA would cover mostly the same concepts (haha you can only teach arrays so many ways) that you should really look at fit and campus life.

I really like your efforts and your honesty. However, you as a “UCLA ambassador”, (in my opinion) aren’t conveying the right message on behalf of a school which counts heavily on the OSS money to achieve its goals (I have seen same message from you in multiple posts).
(Eventhough I agree with you in principle)

@WCbound You can use the UCLA Schedule of Classes to find the class sizes for the most recent 3 quarters:

@uclaparent9 Any postings I post here on CC are my own opinion and do not reflect an official UCLA position. I mention I am a UCLA Engineering Ambassador to provide context when answering applicant questions. I am not a financial aid counselor and posted in the past that I am not qualified to make definite answers on it. However I was asked directly and I gave him my honest opinion. I am not paid to post on CC in any way nor is it part of my job responsibilities. I think it would be irresponsible of me to say hey its great to go 60k per year in debt just to collect another persons’ ops tuition. I think other posters would agree. And like all online forums you should take the advice and comments all with a grain of salt. I hope the majority of my posts have been helpful.

@10s4life Thank you so much for your advice! It means so much  I will definitely consider it

I have a question for premed in ucla how are the research and hospital volunteering opportunities? Do u get them easily? What is their quality. How many manage to publish papers etc?..

We also wanted to tour the hospital and research institutes while we were there for bruins day. Is this possible? Who should we connect with to set this up? Is there a link where can see the research opportunities and review them?

^ There is a certain hallway where research groups have their presentation posters on display. There will probably be a pre-med. informative meeting at a large auditorium (last year it was in Royce Hall, and there was an early AM and a mid-day choice for same); after the informative meeting, last year there was an open question and answer period of time, and assuming they have a similar venue this Bruin Day, this might be a time you could ask, if you don’t get answers to above before then. I don’t have any info. on hospital/research inst. tour(s), but possibly you’d be able to ask where that hallway with these poster displays is, or at least if you don’t find the tour you’re seeking. Though, sorry but I don’t actually know whether or not that research-poster-display hallway will be open or not for Bruin Day.

@xc&track-run oh hey you ended up choosing Ucla last year?

Our D was accepted to engineering for Fall 2018 but has now decided that she does not want to study engineering. We are trying to figure out her options with UCLA. Can she automatically switch to L&S now or does she need to get approval from someone at L&S? We have tried to figure this out online to no avail, and are hoping to get some feedback before she calls the admissions office.

@13579X She can switch to L&S out of Engineering right away at orientation.

Thanks @xc&track-run

Will tell her. We would like to meet the pre med advisors too. How do we reach out to them?

hey guys I was selected for financial aid verification and they requested a 2016 w-2 form from me but i was never required to file one so I don’t have. It says you can submit a statement listing amount of income if don’t have a w-2 form but what kind of statement do they want me to submit? What should it look like?

@yerinable - I suggest an email or a call to them. I know for schools that required CSS financial info, they had a form you simply signed verifying that you did not have a W-2 for 2016. In this case, I’m not sure what they would want.

Everyone get their acceptance package?

@DonGately16 No acceptance package yet and we are in Texas. Phone admissions, since they are putting together a list of all those students who haven’t received their packages yet.
