Here’s what I don’t understand- clearly the alumni scholarship invite selection process was holistic this year. There are way too many people with super high stats who didn’t get it for it to be solely based on gpa/test scores. So if the people who received it were reviewed holistically, how would anyone who didn’t get it be likely to get accepted? It seems as though anyone who wasn’t invited isn’t viewed as a strong holistic candidate. Am I missing something?
@grundeis Applying or not applying have no affect on admissions. The selection process is seperate. Ucla does not take any kind of demonstrated interest into account as do all the UCs
I’m with everyone here wanting answers - but we’re never going to get them. College admissions is an impossible to understand maze of confusion. We’re always trying to speculate motives for this and that but only a few are in the know and they aren’t posting here…they are busy at work… in the admissions office. Now, that being said - it’s still not going to keep me from checking back here often for my D.
This is off topic, but does anyone know if Berkeley has sent their alumni scholarship invites?
@C/o 2022 mom you are forgetting that only 5k are invited while they accept 16-17k so even if every person who was invited gets accepted there are still 12k more people they have to accept
is it true that if you get the Regents invite, you are pretty much getting in 99.9% (like a likely letter from Yale or something).??
Thank you. When people were saying 20% of applicants were invited I was getting concerned.
@grundeis It’s highly unlikely you will get denied if you receive a Ucla regents letter.
I just talked to UCLA admissions advisor and they said that they are WAY behind this year-might send Regents with admission decisions and have not gone through all apps so alumni invite is at random unlike previous years…
@10s4life may have some knowledge about the random Alumni invites.
@sandiegodad2017 I’ll check into it. A bit busy with school today but I’ll update if I find anything out.
Okay everyone I have some interesting news, I just called the alumni association to ask them about who they sent the invites to and apparently it’s not the top 20% or even 5%, they sent them to people based on what extracurriculars they did because they think they might be a good fit for the association. So now all our calculations are off…if you didn’t get one you shouldn’t worry at all.
So it’s not random and it’s not stats based
However they only sent out 5k invites though…
So many twists and turns!
@Mordowin I wonder if the invitees still need to be somewhat academically qualified to receive this. It seems weird that they would go through just the extracurriculars of 100K apps to send these invites.
Is this a current admission officer?
Can you please provide more info??
What did he say abt regents/alumni/ANYTHing else abt UCLA??
@college2022c @grundeis It was someone who is on the alumni association not an admissions officer, she told me that everyone who is referred to them was because of stuff they did in high school (extracurricular and essays particularly) and has no correlation to the top percentage of students. They probably are academically qualifiedish as long as they don’t have super low scores or gpas, which is why many people with less than the best of the best scores got them. However, personally I think thats still somewhat of a holistic approach and does run parallel to the actual admissions process, so if you think you had good ECs and essays and your stats meet the average of those admitted resulting in you getting the invitation, then you probably will get admitted, but that just my two cents.
So has it always been the referencing, or was it percentages before? Also, how many people got the invitation this year (if you know)?
Also, did she say anything about the Regents notification??
Like everyone is expecting it ONE day after the alumni email, but it didn’t come…now everyone’s expecting it today :))…
It sounds like there is much confusion re the alumni association invite (what it means or whether it means anything at all). As such, I wouldn’t sweat whether you got it or not. I also wouldn’t check my e-mail every 10 minutes hoping to see an e-mail re Regents that only a very small percentage of students receive. What will be, will be!
