congrats! is/oos/intl?
@TheDjCurryRapper Congrats! Did you just get notified this morning (Sunday?) or is it from yesterday? Wondering if theyâre sending out more acceptances today! Also, are you in-state, oos or international?
For the ones who got off the waitlist on Saturday morning the deadline to SIR is May 7th.
got off the waitlist yesterday as an is letters and science student (public affairs). this forum kept me sane so thank you!
Got off yesterday at 8 am. Iâm IS and admitted to the college of letters and science. This thread was really helpful. I just wanted to add that I wrote a whole letter in that waitlist box after I put the minimum information that they suggested. My letter showed interest and I added new achievements (basically like an appeal). My SAT was 1190 for reference. I was in the top 10% in my grade tho. However, I donât think stats played too much of a role. My essays definitely set me aside.
I really suggest not doing the bare minimum when you have 7000 characters in the box. Even though it doesnât directly say write a letter, if you really want to get in, then you should definitely do the most and show as much interest as possible. If you didnât get off the waitlist that may be reason why, but there is still time and you may get off. But just for future reference, take advantage of those little things.
@janu2481 @WCWSM52 I am an oos student and was notified yesterday morning, but did not check my email until today haha. And also, they sent a financial aid email before I received an email about my status update on the portal. Good luck guys
Think I read all the recent comments about people getting off the wait list and it seems none were engineering students yet, correct?
@aliwa1 No engineering students have gotten off yet looking at this thread
Engineering will have its own wave but the space is limited because of high yield rate.
Is that true about the yield for Samueli? Someone posted here that historically the yield has been lower due to engineering applicants being high stats and having a number of other competitive options for engineering schools that are comparable to Samueli.
There were lots of kids on here saying ACTS in the 20âs and SATâs ranging from 1200 0 1400. I am not saying everyone, just there are alot on here with seriously low stats --I just tend to think those people are getting in on something different than grades, stats or ecâs. Just a different standard for certain kids which is sad especially for the in state kids whose parents pay taxes to support the UCâs.
i have a 99th+ percentile SAT and have not gotten off the waitlist, i know how you feel. but also we have to remember that college admissions dont define our worth, and everyone who got in did so on merit and because ucla thinks they will provide value and richness to its campus. theres also the factor of luck and the fact that the college admissions system just isnt created to be âfairâ. we wont ever truly know why we werent admitted and others were, but dont bring them down to make yourself feel better. @jasper906
also, out of state kids pay extra to support the UC system, same as california kids do when they go to other states.
Yeah so this is my theory about engineering students. UCLA knows that yield rate will be low right? so what do they do? They simply accept a lot more people than their space. Now the available spaces will be limited for waitlisted students. This results in less acceptance from waitlisted students. However, there will be absolutely acceptances from the waitlist but not as much as letter of science college. ( Let me correct myself: basically yield rate does not mean anything in this situation)
Got in yesterday for Bussiness Econ. IS, 1460 SAT, 4.12 GPA (I donât remember my UC gpa), 8 APâs, and wrote a long letter in the 7000 character box. This forum really helped and good luck to everyone.
@Shdjdgd - yes it could be that Samueli accepted more students than in the past to compensate for lower yield - and even trying to anticipate the lower OOS and intl yield issues with Covid 19. Historically the yield for Samueli has been about 10% lower than L&S. I did some more digging - Samueli enrollment has been going up each year during the last several years. They could have over compensated this year. The last couple of years, they accepted around 3000 out of approx 30k applicants. - looking for a final enrollment close to 1000. Without knowing the #s for this year, we are guessing but you might be right in that the reason we have not yet seen a wave for Samueli is for all the reasons above. I do agree there will be a wave at some point but much smaller than we are hoping for - I am thinking it will be next week.
http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_fr/Frosh_Prof19.htm - Here is the UCLA admitted student profile for the class of 2023. 25th to 75th percentile for in-state SAT was 1300-1530, whereas out of state was 1440-1550, and international was 1480-1550.
If you look at the stats, the out-of-state and international kids who apply are just a lot stronger on average than in-state. The 25th percentile for in-state applicants to UCLA is 1120, while for international it is 1370. If admission rates are higher, that is because the out of state applicants are more qualified.
@WhimsicalSquid Absolutely, itâs agonizing indeed. Best of luck to your daughter!
Stats arenât everything when everyone has the same stats! remember numbers do not show anything besides academic accomplishments⊠they want personality that will carry over into ucla that will benefit them
I agree 100%. UCLA does not want a bunch of wallflower nerds sitting in their dorm rooms, and after graduating sitting a desk doing nothing for UCLA or society. For example, one UCLA admissions counselor emphasized that being the president of an established club means less than being the founder of a club that you lead for multiple years. UCLA wants an applicant that is a âdoerâ. UCLA wants to recruit and shape applicants to be leaders.
