is ucla a commuter school? i read that only 35% of students live on campus

its not a commuter school. It would be impossible with all the traffic across LA. If only 35% of the students live on campus then the rest (or at least a great percentage) are living in apartments right near the campus.

No it's not. 80-90% of first years and second years live in on-campus housing -- after that you have to live off-campus.

the 35% living on campus (if that's even accurate) is very deceiving cuz most students (primarily upperclassmen though) live off-campus in the apartments, which are (almost) all walking-distance from campus.

i only know 2 people who commute as in driving their car to school.

Definitely not. The 35% figure most likely refers the the percent of all undegraduate students living on campus.

As mentioned already, about 90% of first years live on campus. For second years, the rate is about 70%, if I remember correctly. The figure drop is due to upperclassmen moving out into the apartments nearby.

However, you do not have to live off campus after the second year. Currently, housing is guaranteed for 3 years; it is moving towards all four years. In fact, 2 new buildings were opened this year and another one is being constructed right now.

I was orignally going to commute, and came to realize what a poor idea that was going to be. I ended up just moving to the dorms.

I commute. I know a lot of other people that commute as well. But, I also know quite a few that live in the off-campus (walking distance) apartments. I suppose you could call or look at the UCLA website for official stats on commuter students.
