UCLA Cost

I applied to UCLA and was wondering if anyone had information as to the typical scholarship amount given to incoming freshman. I should be considered for merit scholarships as I am academically quailified. I am a non-Californian resident so the total cost listed on their site is $61,618. If I was admitted, how much should I expect to have to pay after any scholarships or grants given by UCLA? Thanks!

As an out-of-state applicant, expect to receive very little if any financial aid from a California public school.

I think you should expect to pay $61,618.

$61,618. As a non-resident, you don’t qualify for state funding.

The UC’s are funded by the State of California and its taxpayers. They do not fund non-residents who do not pay taxes in the state.
Merit funding is very limited because it is a public school, so non-residents pay full fees.
If you have need and are eligible for federal funding, you may get up to $5900 in a Pell grant. That would be the total for the year divided by the quarters. The Regents Scholarship is usually $2K, you do the math.

How much can your parents pay?

if you need financial aid you cannot afford UCLA. It was a waste of an application fee.

I’m curious as to what your guidance counselor told you about the cost of a UC as a non-resident?

The GC’s are usually pretty knowledgeable about those non-resident full fees for the UC campuses.

Do,you have significant financial need…or can your parent pay the full cost of attendance.

I’m only asking because you applied to Stanford REA…and their only aid is need based aid.

UCLA like all the UC’s give little merit scholarships so the majority of FA is need-based for in-state CA students. Regents scholarships are academic based and these are $2000K/year. The UCLA achievement scholarships can range from $500-10K/year. Here is a link to available merit scholarships for UCLA but as stated by other posters, expect to pay full fees. I would run the net price calculator to get an estimate your costs.
