I concur... you typed Mechanical Engineering twice -- Chemical Engineering, perhaps?

I must not fear
For fear is the mindkiller
Fear is the little-death that brings total oblieration
l face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

To put it bluntly, unless you're a film major, you will have to learn the value of time management, priorities and finding yourself at UCLA. Even if you change to chemistry, biochemistry, or biology, chances are you still have to work just as hard.

Much like when I went to my first Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween, they say it only hurts the first time.

P.S. My GPA this quarter is around a 3.0, I didn't study as hard as I should have. I didn't do a lot of the homeworks (To think of it, I didn't do any, friends are great).

Yes, I just pasted from the HSSEAS curriculum, and did it too fast.

You're going to have to change your attitude if you want to succeed at UCLA. Your attitude matches those who go to CCs ..

^lol except i still manage to do well somehow
4.4 weighted gpa=ELC ;]
ahhh i'll go try it out

actually anyone want to chance me?
major: chem E
GPA UW: 3.98
GPA W: 4.43
SATI: 2220 (720 CR, 740 W, 760 M)
SATII chem: 750
chinese: 800
math2: 800

um...
others: ELC
extracurrics: varsity sport 3 years, 8 years piano, national merit semi-finalist, stanford medical school internship one summer, ap scholar...some other non-important stuff

Yeah I'd say you're good.

Well I think for a lot of people that doing well in high school doesn't necessarily mean working hard...I found that I could breeze through some AP classes without much effort. HOWEVER, college is really different, especially here at UCLA where EVERYONE is smart and does well. If you go in with the attitude of minimum work for A's, let's just say it'll be more than a rude awakening first quarter.

EDIT:
Forgot to mention, you're definitely more than qualified for UCLA...but again, having high stats don't translate into success here if you don't have a hardworking mentality to go with it. :)

^haha very true. i do recall a friend of mine saying college is much harder than high school. thanks for the help guys, hopefully i'll start to like physics more --

How terrible is Rohr? I'm retaking CS31 after a quarter with Smallberg. Would I be able to do fine with Rohr? Are projects going to be similar ? ..
[/Quote]

If you've already taken the course, Rohr won't be too bad. I had Rohr fall quarter and he's not really good at grabbing your attention when lecturing...especially since he closes his eyes during 70% of the lecture.

Simply put, Rohr isn't a great professor for those who are new to C++ but he's fine if you've already had some background.

what other engineering schools were you accepted to? what made you choose ucla? i say this because i'm torn between ucla and usc engineering. maybe only one school will admit me and take care of the problem.

this is more of a seasnet question, but

when i try to login to squirrelmail, this pops up

"You need to have php4 installed with the multibyte string function enabled (using configure option --enable-mbstring)."

what the hell does that mean? do i have to go down to the lab to get it fixed?

I don't know. Sounds more like a problem with SEASNet Webmail.

At the beginning of the month, the required text for Smallberg's CS32 was the 5th edition of "Data Abstraction & Problem Solving with C++", but now the required text shows up as the 4th edition. Does anyone know why this would be and if it really matters (I would have thought the most recent edition would be most desireable...??)

Where are you reading this: the Winter 2007 CS 32 website/syllabus, or the UCLA Textbooks listing? No, it doesn't matter... The material in that book doesn't change between editions, and the course doesn't depend heavily on page-numbering accuracy or any bundled material. I'm guessing that the UCLA Store has had to send back the book's 5th edition to the publisher.

Thanks flopsy, you're probably right. My S was looking at the textbooks link in his MyUCLA schedule for next quarter, which sends him to the UCLA Store. We'll go for the least expensive one then! =)

I don't know how you would know this, but do you know the average cumulative GPA of EE majors already at UCLA? Or perhaps the average that EE majors graduate from UCLA with?

I don't know -- I think the ballpark EE GPA is ~2.80, because most major-required courses are curved to a B- (2.66), and then you factor in the fact that one out of four courses taken is a North Campus GE, which are usually curved to a B (3.00) or not curved at all.

Hi I am new and very anxious about admissions to UCLA. I applied to the Mechanical Engineering Undergrad program. I was curious to let me know if I have a good shot at getting in.

I am from out of state, go to really really good public high school, Millburn High, take all honors pretty much, though im not sure if this helps my UC GPA.
I have also taken 3 AP's so far, and am taking 4 AP's this year + AP Physics C(Independent Study)

SAT: 800 M, 670 CR, 580 W

AP Bio: 5
AP Comp Sci AB: 5
AP Physics: 5

SAT IIs:
Math II: 790
Physics: 790
Bio: 780

3.52 UW GPA (not sure how to weight it)

Math + Science courses:

10th grade
AP Bio: B
Algebra 2: B
Comp Sci II: A

11th grade
pre-calc: B
AP Physics: A
AP Comp Sci: A

Other:
4 year cross country
3 year wrestling + 1 year winter track
2 year lacrosse + 2 year spring track
nature conservancey projects (assisting Boy Scouts)4 weeks both 10th and 11th summers
80 hours Community Service Newark Safe Summer Program
3 years Student Government

Most importantly, my mother passed right before I entered highschool. I live only with my dad. I wrote about how this affected me in my personal statement.

Do you think they will take into account my sat II's and my AP's as overriding factors to my relatively low GPA?

Thanks for your help!
