I am in the Honors Program at my school, I have a 4.0 and I am completing all of my prerequisites for the English major at UCLA. One of them is to have a second semester of a foreign language and two foreign literature courses. I have the two foreign literature courses, but I cannot fit the foreign language course into my schedule. I am applying for Fall 2010 admission and all prerequisites must be complete by the end of spring. Does anyone know if it is absolutely crucial to have the second semester of a language?

For IGETC yes it is essential. Two foreign language courses. English is an impacted major, so not only are there going to be candidates with IGETC certification, but there will be candidates with all pre-req’s done on top of a great GPA. I would suggest to make room for the foreign language course because no other course should be more important than a pre-req course, not even IGETC certification courses. On the other hand, if you apply to a less impacted major like comparative lit, then transfer to English after a quarter (very easy since they are in the same department and post the same pre-reqs) then you don’t have to worry so much about one class since you can take it at UCLA. Pre-reqs are vital for impacted majors. Also, don’t forget you can just take the foreign language p/np and throw it in spring semester. It requires less energy since you know you will pass (Only idiots don’t pass a P/NP course at CC)
