Hi everyone! I’m an English major who recently applied to UCLA. I have all of my prereqs done except for the foreign language. I fulfilled the L&S breadth requirements through my high school foreign language classes, but UCLA’s also noted that in this event, they want foreign literature in translation classes. Would not taking one of these classes jeopardize my chances for admission? I’ve already registered for the spring semester and have a full plate. For context, I have IGETC done, 3.5 GPA, and will be TAP certified. Thanks, guys.
College level foreign language, not high school level, is required as a prerequisite for the English major at UCLA. Depending on how many semesters you take of college level language, you will need some foreign lit in translation classes. Refer to assist.org.
Remember that you are competing for a spot with applicants who have taken all the required classes.
Edit:
For the English transfer major to UCLA, D’s transfer counselor at CC insisted on one full year of college level language even though she had 3 years at high school that fulfilled IGETC. So she took a full year (2 semesters at her CC) of college level foreign language and 2 foreign lit in translation courses.
[From UCLA’s webpage](http://www.english.ucla.edu/academics/undergraduate-/programs-a-courses-/50-preparation): “Transfer students who have satisfied the College of Letters and Science foreign language requirement at the high school level through the IGETC program may satisfy the departmental requirement with five foreign literature in translation courses.”
So you would need 5 foreign lit in translation courses if you use IGETC. Not many CCs offer that many foreign lit in translation courses.
The UCs generally want you to have as many prerequisites done before transfer as possible. It’s important to keep in mind that this is especially crucial when it comes to English because it is an impacted major at UCLA, so more people apply than they have room for. You want to be as competitive as possible because there will likely be people who applied with all of their prerequisites done and/or have a high GPA.
This does not necessarily put you out of the running, but it is best to have the prerequisites done. UNLESS your CC does not offer the necessary foreign lit in translations courses like Happy2Help said in the previous course. I would check to see how often/if the courses are available at your college because that might help your case as well. They do, however, give the option of either taking the 5 courses of foreign language or a combination of foreign language and the literature in translation classes.
I wish you the best of luck though! Try not to stress yourself out too much.
I was looking into applying for TAP. Were the courses available only general education courses or major courses were available too?
The CCs are different in how they run their honors programs for TAP to UCLA. Some offer more (or less) honors classes than others. Some accept honors units from other CCs.
^ Yep, it will depend on how your CC does it.
