UCLA Enrollment, Previously Used Prerequisite Now Missing

Has anyone else had this problem? My son previously used course credit from his AP Calculus (score 5) to enroll in several classes. Now, as time is running out and he is trying to enroll in a popular Computer Science class, he is being blocked by the computer because it says he is suddenly missing that Calculus course, which is a requisite to enroll in the class. He can’t reach anyone by phone because office staff are staying home because of Covid. He used messaging to try to reach someone but doesn’t know if he will hear back in time. Has anyone else been able to contact the enrollment people for Computer Science?

At UCLA:

5 on AP calculus AB = MATH 31A for L&S, “calculus”* for engineering
5 on AP calculus BC = MATH 31A and 31B for L&S, MATH 31A + “calculus”* for engineering

*generic “calculus” credit that is not a specific UCLA course given

The only CS courses that list any of these math courses are M182 and M184, both of which list MATH 31B as an enforced requisite.

Since CS is in the engineering division at UCLA, it is likely that the engineering AP credit is being applied, so a 5 on either AP calculus would not fulfill the MATH 31B enforced requisite.

If he had previously used his AP score to fulfill the enforced requisite for other courses, it could be that the other courses only required MATH 31A or “calculus”, and/or they were in departments within L&S that allow for greater equivalency to UCLA MATH 31A and/or 31B with AP calculus scores.

@ucbalumnus Thanks so much for your detailed reply! He took AP Calculus AB and got credit for Math 31A. This enabled him to take Math 31B as a freshman at UCLA, which he passed and did well in. He also used this 31A prerequisite to take 3 additional classes (2 math and 1 physics) in later quarters without any problem.

He is trying to sign up for M182, a Computer Science elective, but is being blocked for not having the prerequisites, which are Math 31A and 31B.

@ucbalumnus I reread your reply and now I think I understand. For his diploma year, the School of Engineering did not give credit for Math 31A for AP Calc AB. He had no problem enrolling in math and physics classes taught in L&S because L&S did give credit for Math 31A.

@BunnyBlue I saw your tag in the 2024 thread and sent you a PM with some options your son could do. I sent it before I saw this so some of the clarifying questions I asked got answered here. Feel free to reach out if u have other questions.

That’s odd. The catalog lists only MATH 31B (not 31A) as an enforced requisite for CS M182 or Bioengineering M182. So if he took MATH 31B, then it should not matter that he may not have taken MATH 31A for the purpose of the engineering division. But it seems like they told the scheduling system to enforce requisites of MATH 31A as well as MATH 31B.

@ucbalumnus Very interesting that you found a listing for the course that only showed Math 31B as a requisite. Makes more sense really. I will report back when my son hears from someone through the messaging system.

@ucbalumnus @10s4life He just got a message back from the Registrar’s Office that the problem was a computer error. They told him to contact someone in the computer department to fix it, but he has no idea whom to contact or how. Meanwhile all the slots in the class and the waitlist have been filled, so the class is closed.

@BunnyBlue I would first fill out an ECR form. That can be found on the OASA website. Then I would message oasa about the situation maybe they can override and enroll him manually. Also email the professor and see if he can issue a PTE. For the computer issue I would email seaslab. Their email address can be found on the OASA website under current students then computer.

@10s4life That is so helpful! I have given all this info to my son so he can still try to get the class. Thank you!

Looks like the class schedule at https://sa.ucla.edu/ro/Public/SOC/ shows the prerequisites for COM SCI M182 and BIOENGR M182 as MATH 31A and MATH 31B (or two other math sequences), rather than just MATH 31B (or the second course in the other math sequences). This does not match the catalog listing.

Perhaps someone familiar with UCLA may be able to answer this question: when a course is cross-listed as this one is, are both listings filling a combined pool of spaces, or does each listing of the course have separate pool of spaces to fill?

@10s4life @ucbalumnus Just wanted to report back that my son submitted the ECR form, and, without doing anything further, found that he had been placed on the wait list for the class. He just got off the wait list today and is now enrolled in the class. Thank you both again for your helpful information!

@BunnyBlue Thats awesome glad it worked out!
