At orientation, I was told by my orientation counselor and the counselor for the engineering school that since I got a 5 on the Calc BC exam, I did not have to option to take math 31A. If I took it again I would not receive credit for the class. Instead, they encouraged me to enroll in 31B.

But I'm now looking at the Mathematics website and it says that a 5 in Calc BC gives me credit for both 31A AND 31B. Does this mean that I won't receive credit for 31B either?? Is it different for the School of Engineering? Also, if I change my school to Letters and Sciences, will that nullify my 31b course?

Now I'm panicking, because there's no way I can fit 32A in my schedule. HELP!

With a 5 on BC you can choose where you want to start at, either 31B or 32A. If you take 31B, you then have to take 32A then the rest of the series from there.

If you got a 5 on BC though I’d probably recommend just skipping 31B…but if you really feel like taking an extra class then go ahead.

If you’re in the School of Engineering, then you 5 on you BC exam only covers 31A ([AP Credit - School of Engineering and Applied Science - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/APCreditEN.htm)). However, if you’re in College of Letters and Science, then the 5 will get you 31A/31B OR 3A/3B (31 Series is like calculus while the 3 series is life science calculus/math)

Basically Ive been told that if you’re in the school of engineering, you’ll be stuck there and it’s kinda hard to switch schools and it’s really hard and I hope you a lot of long nights and a lot of luck. But if you’re in the college of letters and science then u can take either the 31 series or 3 series depending on what you like.

If you don’t get the math course you want this quarter, you can always get it next quarter. That’s what Im doing for 3C winter quarter hopefully.

Contact your academic counselor in the School of Engineering to make sure because I’m a third year engineer who got out of math 31AB with a 5. That would suck if the new AP credit just got implemented this year because the link from Noxfinitie hasn’t been updated since 2007.

that’s weird, because our OC (mechanical/aero engineering) told us that we could go ahead and enroll in 32A, with a 5 in BC. And we were the last orientation session this year…so this would be the most accurate

The site is out of date notice it says “Last modified: July, 2007”. I’m 99% sure you can skip 31B if you got a 5 on the BC test in the engineering school though feel free to contact your counselor if you want peace of mind.

I WANT to take 31B, and that is the course I’m enrolled in. I spoke with a counselor from Letters and Sciences and was informed that if 31B credit doesn’t show up on my DLR, then I can take 31B and receive units/credit for it (which happens to be my case somehow?). My DLR only shows my receiving credit for 31A, and then farther down “Calculus - 4.0 credits.” I’m not sure what the second means, but it doesn’t explicitly say 31B so I figure I’m safe.

So my second question is if I switch to Letters and Sciences from Engineering, will they look at my AP scores again to see which GEs I fulfill? For HSSEAS, there were only 5 GEs.

I would skip it now, but my schedule is set so that if I don’t take 31b, I’d have to take 32a with Prof Mess. Judging from his profile on bruinwalk, he’s terribly difficult and incomprehensible. I’d much rather stay in 31b if possible…

I would suggest this. Don’t take any math class since I see you are wavering towards college of L&S and school of E. So get to ucla first, see what you like in terms of majors, then choose what math course, preferably by winter quarter. so you know where you’re going. oh and regularly meet with your counselor to make sure you’re on track.

You don’t need to take math your first quarter. Look for a GE or some other requirement that will fit in your schedule instead of taking math 31B.

You can take a class other than math instead of switching 31b for 32a…I don’t see what the point would be in taking 31b when you don’t have to unless you want to do it just to “review” the material

In terms of concepts I’d actually say 32a is easier than 31b. It’s mostly vector algebra and the differentiation aspects of multivariable calc, which is pretty intuitive if you understood calc bc. The one think to keep in mind though is that if you take 32a you’ll be with all the hotshots who got 5s in calc bc, whereas in 31b you’ll be competing against a relatively less talented bunch.
