UCLA Honors Essay - Advice Appreciated

Hi, I'm a newly admitted student to UCLA and am interested in applying for a place in the honors program. I have a few questions about the essay for any UCLA honors student or alumni.

When it says an interdisciplinary project, does it have to be one that has parts of it already in existence or can it be any subject that interests us? For example, I'd like to study a program about E-books, even though there are currently no universities that offer courses on them.

Furthermore the term interdisciplinary, how specific does it have to be? I have read about the freshman clusters and the general education requirements and am a bit uncertain about what is considered interdisciplinary. On the general education site there are the three foundations: Arts & Humanities, Society & Culture, Scientific Inquiry. Does interdisciplinary mean a project that combines two or more of these? However in any one foundation there are sub-categories such as Physical and Life Sciences, or Social and Historical Analysis. Are these considered the disciplines?

If you can kindly clear up my uncertainties, it would be much appreciated.

I have the same question!
Also, does the “essay” have to be a formal 3 paragraph essay or just one paragraph that addresses all of the questions?

Don’t stress too much about the essay. Mainly they just want to see that you’ve taken it seriously.

I wasn’t prompted with an essay when I just applied right now. I saw your post and decided to get on it, but then I applied on MyUCLA and it just had me click on “I acknowledge…” and on “Submit” and it successfully submitted.

The ideas you have seem good… and the interdisciplinary part isn’t that important. Trust us when we say that this essay isn’t a big deal at all–if you meet the qualifications and submit an app you’re basically in.
