UCLA Honors Program Question...

Ok, so I saw the requirements for to be qualified for the program.
I have a 4.18 GPA but only a 30 on ACT
but class rank wise I am 3.2% does that still count into the 3% category?
Would I still qualify? If I don't qualify is there still a chance for me to write an amazing essay to get in?

Straight from [Admission to College Honors](http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/honors/freshman.html)

There are two ways you may qualify for the College Honors Program - by GPA and Test Scores OR by Class Rank:

Your GPA and Test Scores (as reported on your UC application):
Fall 2009 Freshman Admits*
* You must have at least a 4.1 GPA (*weighted, capped)
AND
an SAT score of at least 2080 or an ACT score of at least 31

Your Class Rank:

* You must rank within the top 3% of your graduating class. We will require that you mail to us an official verification of your rank.

Therefore you barely don’t qualify.
It doesn’t matter if you write a really good essay you don’t qualify to join honors let alone be admitted.
*Although I would contact the UCLA honors program to see if they don’t count 3.2% as top 3% (by rounding down or something). But I would imagine the cut off is 3% no exceptions…

Don’t fret, you can still join the honors program after taking 12 units at UCLA and join as a continuing student.
And since priority enrollment is no longer a benefit of the honors program, it’s really not a big deal if you have to wait a couple quarters or so before being eligible to join CH.

lol. I’m class rank 3.2% too. (I hate my senior peers sometimes, they keep dropping out.)

And no, that does not count as 3%. When I went to College Admit day for UCLA, I actually asked the lady that heads the honors program if that counts, and she said no, right after a long laugh from the other people there. ^^;

She said it would be unfair (I don’t really remember exactly) and what about students in the 3.3% or 3.5% and so on. I can’t really argue with that, but still…

Aha silvercross, that was you?

Probably the most entertaining moment of the entire day (until housing tours and stuff at the end).

I feel for you, but on the bright side you have to remember that they’re removing priority enrollment so, the advantage of doing it as a pure freshman aren’t nearly as cool (imo).

Besides that, you were the only one who had the balls to speak up, I’m sure a lot of people were wondering the exact same thing. Kudos.

You were there? Yeah, that was me. lol. Wow, what a coincidence.

I have a question that’s related in a way, is there any convenient way of finding out what your weighted/capped/whatever UC GPA is? My HS transcript is OOS, I had some APs, honors, and college classes, I sure as hell don’t want to go over my UC app with a calculator, is there somewhere on myUCLA that shows it?

funny thing is im 3.2% as well :)

silvercross- I was there too. Tuesday right?

Yep, the 7th. (Would have gone the 6th but it was full. -_-)

A CC meetup already…

haha well its ok. I bet another 10 people were probably gonna ask a question like that

UCLAboi:

The UC gpa (capped, weighted) is calculated by the Big UC computer in the sky (well, really Oakland), for admissions purposes only. Unfortunately, for OOS applicants, the UC rules are such that only AP/IB courses are weighted in the calculation of UC gpa. (UC-approved honors courses also count for a bonus point for instate kids.)

Suggest you contact the honors program and inquire how they address OOS kids for criteria #1 – perhaps they cannot.

just so you know. i was there on admit day (also on the 7th). the minimum sat score of 2080 is not from just one sitting. it is your superscore.
