UCLA Honors Application

I didn't receive Honors status when I was accepted, but the site says you're allowed to qualify in two ways -either the top 3% of your high school, or above a 2080 SAT and 4.1 UC weighted GPA- I meet the second requirement. I definitely want to apply, so I set out to do that not long ago.

However, when I click on the Honors Application on MyUCLA, it says "You are attempting to qualify by ranking within the top 3% of your graduating class." I don't want that. How do I change my method of qualification?

Maybe you do rank in the top 3%?

I don't think ur in if they didn't tell you when you were accepted...I believe it is actually 2100 SAT I...is your score 2080<x<2100?

No, I had a 2360, so I'm sure that'll work. My UW GPA was ~3.8, and I'm 98.6% certain that's above 4.1 weighted too, but not enough for the top 3%.

hmm, maybe only certain people with those scores can apply? Like maybe they consider ECs and stuff too in the initial screening....idk, if you still can't get it to work, look for a "help" link, or call the OUA Monday.

Also, the app isn't due til May 1st, right? It just seems kinda late...

I don't think the original question was answered, though. He wants to apply with a 2080+ and a 4.1+, not with a top 3% rank. And when it says paste your essay, or whatever, it mentions that you're attempting to qualify by being in the top 3%. So he wants to know how to change it to qualifying with the other requirement, I think.

I have another question. If I had above a 2080, but a 4.08, and I now have a 4.15 based on senior year classes, could I notify those who run the Honors Program and possibly qualify immediately? Or do only 10th and 11th grade count?

I'm sure you can apply, PseudoIntellect, go for it! I think that's part of why we can still apply for it, even though we weren't initially offerred it.

And he (she?) also nailed my question, it's gone unanswered so far, how do I change my application so that I'm applying under the 2080+/4.1 and not the 3%?

Best way is to contact them directly... Admission to College Honors

If worse comes to worse, you can apply later using college GPA. The only drawback is that you miss at least one quarter of priority (which can be made up for through other means, such as clusters).

what GPA do you have to maintain to stay in the honors program?

also, if you qualify and do the essay thingy, are you basically in, or do they only admit a small %? (I think this was discussed before, but I couldn't find the post)....

thanks!

anyone who qualifies and writes the essay following directions is in. once you're in you need to maintain a 3.2 to stay in, and you need a 3.5 when you graduate to graduate with honors.

Really? Just a 3.2? I thought that it's increases over time to a 3.5 by like say your 3rd year or something like that. You're also suppose to have a certain number of honors unit by the end of each year too.

sweet, thanks liyana!

I'm assuming you're in honors, if you don't mind me asking, how do you like it? Do you feel like it's worth the extra effort and such?

Also, kinda on a slightly different topic, but how's the quarter system? Is it really hard to keep on top of classes and such since they go so quickly?

Thanks!!!

i do like it, and if i hadn't been in it i wouldn't have taken a certain honors collegium class which gave me a whole new focus for my career. basically, my favorite part is the honors collegium requirement, because those are 2 of the best classes i've ever taken at UCLA. i do think it is worth the extra time and effort, because what you get with minimal extra effort is so much more. you get greater connections with your professors, and smaller class sizes.

as for quarters, i love the quarter system. extra variety is always good. they go by more quickly, but, they let you focus that more intensely on a subject. i greatly prefer quarters over semesters!

Ok, I was wondering if you really did get closer connections with professors (lots of schools advertise it, but it's not always true)...but from the people I've talked to in UCLA honors, it is! So that's awesome to hear!

And thanks for the info on quarters, I'm visiting campus on Wednesday so I'm super pumped!

I might PM you with more questions later, if you don't mind ;)

not at all!
just keep in mind i'm juggling 21 units if i don't get back to you ;)

haha no problem! I probably won't have any Qs until next wknd anyway! thanks for your help!!!

hey vc08! are you applying for the 2080/4.1 too?

let me know if you figure anything out, it's been two days and I haven't gotten a response from the Admissions Office!

For my honors courses, 20AH and 20BH, I had really close connections with my professor. Sometimes a couple of us would just sit in his office and chat about stuff. We still go down once in a while.
