UCLA Honors Program

Hi. I'm planning to enter UCLA next year as a freshman and is wondering about their honors program. How does it work? Are freshmen allowed to join? On the Regents Scholar booklet, it said something about counseling from the College of Letters and Science, Honors Program. Does that mean anything?

Thank you in advance!

Okay, so I read over the threads, and from what I can see, the honors program doesn’t really do much aside from giving you the benefit of priority enrollment? Since I was awarded the Regents scholarship, would you still recommend me applying for the program? I read over the Regents booklet and it said:

PREFERENTIAL PRE-ENROLLMENT: Preferred early enrollment will be offered beginning
with the second quarter after appointment as a Regents scholar. Information will be sent to you before each quarter begins.

Based on this, does this also equate to priority enrollment, that I can choose my classes before the majority of incoming freshmen?

The honors program doesn’t get you priority enrollment. Regents is the only academic program that does.

Honors can get you better counseling options though.

So in your opinion, would the honors be a beneficial plus or should I concentrate on other areas, like internships and community services?

Honors is a total blow-job. The only thing it gets you, in reality, is a little extra seal on your diploma.

I don’t know. It doesn’t take much effort to stay in honors, and it does have a few benefits. If any Honors Collegium classes interest you, maybe you could take. It’s not a bad idea to take departmental honors classes either. Some of this decision might depend on your major too.

dont do it tear…the counselors arent even that good…u have to take harder classes…and u dont even get priority enrollment…basically no advantages exist whatsoever…and grad schools would care much more about a higher gpa and better EC than a little honors demarkation on a diploma

I actually got in as a business econ major, but is thinking of trying to switch to maybe pre-med or nursing. I’m not all that sure anymore, actually. I actually thought the Honors Program would be somewhat similar to honors classes in high school, but it seems that it doesn’t really do much for you except add a few more coursework.

And thanks ThisCouldBeHeavn and binks09 for taking the time to answer my questions.

I don’t know the exact numbers, but I’ve read somewhere that the number of students who start off with honors and then end up graduating with honors is really low (something under 50%). I’d go try departmental honors instead.

Unlike the other poster, I believe you do get priority enrollment from being in honors but it really isn’t worth it by itself to take part in the program. You have Regents anyways so I wouldn’t know how the “priorities” would stack up.

Hey Tear, when did you receive your Regents booklet? I have received the UCLA admission packet, but not about the Regents Scholarship yet…

You don’t get priority for honors. Only Regents, athletes, veterans and the disabled get priority enrollment. Honors classes offered by departments are a bit like honors classes in high school. The seminar type Collegium classes are different, and their worth will probably depend heavily on the individual. I haven’t done any honors contracts, so it’s hard to say what they’re like.

@maylix, I actually received the booklet in the mail maybe around Tuesday, March 16, 2010. That might be the exact date or could be a day earlier or later. I just know that I received it before I got the acceptance package from UCLA in the mail.

If you graduate with honors, would that make you an even more competitive applicant for, say, graduate school? Do they add a few more points to your GPA like it does in high school?

Oh hmm! I wonder why I haven’t received it yet :/

I am also curious about what exactly the UCLA Honors Program is. I didn’t expect to read the number of misgivings about it…

No, there’s no way to get > 4.0 at UCLA. Some schools give 4.3 for an A+, but here an A+ is 4.0 and Honors classes count the same. College Honors won’t get you a better shot at grad school, and it probably won’t help your job prospects either. It’s really mostly for your own edification I guess.

Departmental honors and scholars programs are more “helpful” for graduate school. [url="<a href="http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/hsprograms.html"]Here’s[/url">http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/hsprograms.html"]Here’s[/url</a>] what the econ department offers.

Thank you for all of the useful information!

How many students/ what percentage do honors
