Is it joining the UCLA Honors Program worth it to get priority registration? How much more work is required when taking an honors class? By the way, my major is within the college of letters and sciences, specifically somewhere in the social sciences if that is any help. Anyone with experience want to recommend or offer any advice?

highly recommend you go into honors... the main thing is like their GPA requirement but aside from that i don't think there is that much to do... my roommate is in honors and he only took 1 honors class so far in 2 years and it doesn't seem to be a lot of work at all... you gonna love priority enrollment once you get here and notice how hard it is to get into some classes...

^^That's not really possible (unless he did a cluster perhaps...?) because you need to have 16 honors units by the end of your second year in order to stay in it.

I'd definitely suggest it. It really isn't that much extra work, especially if you take a cluster and knock out 15 of those units your first year. The GPA requirement is a good motivator, and priority enrollment is really useful. Plus, it's a great thing to have on a resume :)

Good luck!

What kind of priority enrollment is for honor students? I thought priority enrollment is for
Regents Scholars only. Please clarify. Thanks

Priority enrollment is for Regents & Alumni Scholars, Special needs students, Honors students, and NCAA athletes. It last for two days and happens before first pass enrollment for the rest of the students. You may sign up for 10 units only during priority. Then you skip first pass (priority is your first pass) and finish enrollment during second pass.

Thank you so much for your response.

Priority doesn't always help though. The priority enrollment cap is half of the class's total capacity and if you end up getting a late priority enrollment you still may not be able to enroll in the class you want (happened to me for spring quarter with Econ 1). Also you still have your first pass, you just still can't exceed 10 units until second pass. However, you can drop any class and add any other class during your first pass. This is very helpful for impacted classes that don't open during priority pass (like any Econ class besides Econ 1 and 2)

its really helpful for the lower div math series if you want to get the good professors... plus it just can't hurt having an earlier enrollment time even if you don't use it...

How likely a student who exceeds the requirements get rejected to the honors program?

how and when do you apply?

For incoming freshman, one can applies online after he/she is admitted. The dead line is 5/1 and the decision doesn't come out until 6/1.

Why is it only for College of Letters & Science? And when is it available to college of engineering?

If you meet the requirements and submit the essay, you get in.

Just asked my friends who are both engineering majors, and according to them, "it's too hard already...no need for honors." So I guess the level is pretty much already honors-quality there. Pretty much everyone is honors-worthy, so there'd be no point in starting a new honors program.

plus engineers don't really have to worry about priority since all the classes we need are limited to engineering majors...

I don't remember priority enrollment ever helping me. I always seemed to have a later priority time so that some of the classes I wanted were already at their priority cap by the time I got around to signing up. Also, the classes for my major are closed during priority enrollment. And by the time I started taking some popular GE's or branching out into other departments, I was already in a high enough class standing for the good first pass time slots.
