UCLA Housing Thread

read the whole article…sure makes it seem grim on getting a spot. ucla just can’t seem to give me a solid reason to choose them…

I have a buddy who lives clear across town in Thai Town and I’m thinking about leaving my car there and just taking a bus over there if I ever want to make any long distance trips anywhere. Probably better than leaving it at my parents house 90 miles away.

ughh ya that article makes parking look a little more bleak. this will be extreme culture shock going from having my own apartment to living in a triple w/ no car. this may be fun though. maybe? disability an option anyone?

^
yeah, I’m about to go create one

^Great idea.

I could get hit by a car, then I would get a parking permit. Plus, then I would have the irony of the whole situation.

Well, if the car breaks your legs (the most likely disability option with a car hitting you), how would you work the gas pedal of your OWN car?

That is a great idea! Actually leaving your car a few miles away sounds like the best option. You’ll prob only need your car on the weekend & it beats paying over $1000 for parking PER year.

i was bummed when i found out how much parking costs and on top of that, how hard it would be to get–i just got a new car last april. but now that i think about it, it’s not so bad. there is a lot to do in the area–even if i didn’t have a car, i could get there through public transportation, which apparently, a lot of students use. also, if i had a car, i would go home every weekend–to help at my family’s business… without a car, they would have to go out of their way to pick me up! haha…

haha I know I am going to try to be able to swing having my car on campus but if not I’ll pat myself on the back for helping the ozone… haha

great idea mbe16!

I would have to elaborately roll and hurt my left shoulder or something…actually I need all my appendages to drive, so I’m at a loss there. maybe post-traumatic stress that happens to last 6 quarters?

That public transportation up in the Bay Area is looking pretty attractive now. Sigh.

hey guys, important question. if I get a room at my dad’s old frat for much much less than on-campus housing, how will it affect my ginormous finaid number? Is it supposed to cover my tuition or is it supposed to go down proportionately to my total cost?

If you have off campus housing your budget will be reduced 2 grand. If you live @ home & commute your budget will be reduced even more. Whether the reduction will be taken from grants or loans is in question. You’ll have to talk to financial aid about that one. :)

i have a question, in the housing application it gives you a choice of either triple/double/single room (shared bathroom) or triple/double/single room (## occupant)… im quite confused… i know the “shared bath” parenthesis mean you want that bathroom but what about that other parenthesis?

Are any transfers planning on living in the apartments? What have you heard about the palm apartments?

I am either going to live in the University apts or Delta Terrace plaza. The chance is rare to be placed in the University apartments or pick your building so I haven’t looked into the details too much… Have you submitted your housing app yet?

never mind

is there a checklist of things we should buy/have for dorming?

No particular checklist for UCLA, but you can look up checklists for living in dorms in general. The key is efficiency. People always bring loads of decorative stuff and accessories (to brag, I suppose)… But, really, moving in with less crap makes moving out so much easier (something that’ll come in very handy right after finals).

[Checklist for college dorm - first year of college](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Campus Life – BigFuture | College Board)

There are some things we can’t bring to UCLA dorms, though, like mini-fridges. I’m sad about this. I’ll have to hide it under my bed or something hahaha.

Flying in, I don’t think I’ll be able to fit even 1/10th of that list into 2 luggages. I think I’d need a Uhaul truck or something to bring all of that stuff.
