How would one choose between "Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics" honors at UCLA and "Molecular Biology" at UC Berkeley?

What should be the deciding factors?

I heard that there is no priority registration at UC Berkeley while UCLA gives priority registration for honors. Should that be one of the critical deciding factors?

If all you care about is academics then I'd probably go to Cal for MCB. If you care about other things, well, I'll leave that up to you to figure out on your visits

I wouldn't put too much weight on the honors program as the deciding factor. It's not extremely selective --- not on par with Regents for example. [Not knocking the honors program - it's pretty open and if you're motivated enough and have the stats, you can pursue it.]

What if admitted with regents?
We are planing to go to all the open houses before deciding, but, would like to know what others think.
This is for someone very social and want to involve in other things than academics.

I decided on UCLA because it gave me the perfect balance between academics, athletics, and a good social life. You'll certainly find social people at Berkeley but what I've been told, and I'm sure people here can back it up, is that UCLA is much more social than Berkeley. I've heard Berkeley isn't that social at all, but that's just what I've heard.

There is PLENTY of socializing at Cal for those who are interested. UCLA and Cal are two very different schools, as are the cities they are in. I really think you should choose based on where you feel the most comfortable living as both schools will offer a great education for you.

you are probably thinking "hey, I got into Cal so that means I'm cut out for the school. I should try and see what happens." This is the wrong psychology. A lot people at Cal are suffering in the typical "premed" majors because they had this stupid mentality when deciding. If you go to Cal you will be facing a "premed" major that has an average 2.8 gpa. You wont get into ANY US medical school with that gpa, and thats IF you are only AVERAGE (which is pretty damn good at a school like Cal).

UCLA is WAY easier, there are more A's given out in the typical "premed" classes, and, because you will be doing well, you will be happier. Cal's competition is INSANE (im sure youve heard the rumors). UCLA is really chill and everyone (for the most part) helps everyone else out. Hard work at Cal doesn't mean you'll get a good grade. At UCLA, if you put in the work, you'll be doing very well.

Again, I beg you, don't go by strict rankings. You want to go a college where you will do WELL because when it comes time to apply for post-undergrad programs, GPA is the top factor.

(I suggest you go to both schools and ask around for people's opinion on this matter)

... which is why Cal on average places a higher percentage of its students in med school than UCLA does?

(Not to mention the myriad other fallacious statements you just made -- like the average GPA being 2.8, the 'happier' point, the rumors of compettition (which are just that--rumors), etc.)

What is the normal GPA range for bio majors in UCLA?

depends !! mimg has the lowest gpa of the bio majors. cant say collectively. hard to say especially when the first 2 years of all of the bio majors are the exact same thing . go to UCLA College of Letters and Science

click on biological sciences what have u
choose your division
shoot the depts questions if u must methinks

I was a chemical engineering major at Cal and during my organic chemistry exams, the fire alarms would get pulled... academically competitive students trying to "set the curve"?...who knows...maybe it's changed. This was almost 8 years ago...

I have no idea how the academic competition compares between UCLA and Cal.

As far as social aspects, I loved Cal. Berkeley may not have the glamour of Westwood, but it is by far a more student oriented, intellectual environment. The city is full of student housing, cafes, bookstores, etc. Football games are also right on campus which makes the town fun on Saturday game day afternoons. Public transportation is much better than LA. I did not have a car and could take BART from the airport, to school, and into San Fran.

hey, you don't have to leave for the rose bowl SIX hours before game time, like we do for band... unless you're a really dedicated tailgater, but leaving at 7am for a 1pm game time is still a bit too early sigh
