Anyone know the date that orientation sign-ups begin? I seem to remember it being June 2nd, but I'm not sure. Also, when should we be thinking about obtaining our Bruin Cards?

Thanks

You haven't sent in your BruinCard form?

If you go to the orientation site, it says everything you need to do before orientation. It says you should apply for your Bruin card 5 weeks before your orientation session, depending on which session you choose. And yes, sign ups begin June 2nd. I don't know what time the site actually allows you to do this, but I would log on as early as possible.

UCLA Orientation Program

Hm...when I got the information call about orientation and such, the guy asked me if I had heard of the BruinCard. I said, "yeah, don't you get that 5 weeks before orientation?" and he said, "no, 2 weeks before."

From in that site (http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/orientation/otherdetails.htm): "In order to obtain your BruinCard, you will need to mail in a 2 x 2 photo with a white background (like a passport photo) along with your signed BruinCard Terms & Conditions statement to the BruinCard Center at least 3 weeks before your Orientation session. For further instruction on how to obtain your BruinCard, go to www.admissions.ucla.edu/NewBruins/Bruincard.htm."

I can't believe I'm procrastinating with this stuff. I haven't even applied for housing yet. I will when finals are over....

They probably just tell you five weeks so you will get it ahead of time. I just hope I am able to get an early orientation session date. Did you guys check out the sign in/sign out info on that site? Check in starts at 7:30 a.m. and check out starts at 9 p.m.? That seems unnecessarily long...hopefully you can leave if you don't want to go to a million workshops .

Haha yeah seriously Kat...I doubt that it's mandatory though--to stay the entire time I mean

Yeah, but you should at least try to get your money's worth - $125! Hehe :)

I wish I can find where I got the info (I'll do a google search later, too tired now) but I remember reading that the latest time you can check in is at 1 PM.

I'll have to do that, since I'll be at summer school and it's kind of in the middle of my classes.

I can't believe they're making us pay for orientation... to my knowledge, UCSD did not require my sister to pay... at least we don't have to pay for the BruinCard! lol.

Yeah xleper, I saw the same thing about there being a 1:00 cutoff time, after which you would lose your $125 and not be able to participate in the orientation. Also, we just send a 2"x2" picture of ourselves in to be used on the bruincard?

yeah, passport photo. there's a debate going on whether or not you can just send a printed photo of yourself.... we'll see, lol.

Man, I really want to show up for everything, but I live just far enough that I would have to leave obscenely early to get there around 7:30 and too close to justify finding a place around there to stay the night. lame.

xleper...yeah if you click the link up above it takes you to the orientation info which states that you must check in by 1 p.m. BUT, I would not advise that at all. I am going to try and get there as early as possible because it is likely going to be crowded and hot! Can't you just tell your professor that you have to go to orientation and skip class for that day? :)

I was going to send a printed photo of myself... it seems that a printed photo should be allowed, considering the fact that they lay out specifications for the photo (white background, no hat, sunglasses, etc.)

lol, i wouldn't DARE try that move with a prof, especially if i don't know them.

but luckily, my schedule changed and now i have no class on friday.

I'll be there, July 11th! =)

Is it absolutely necessary to attend the orientation?

I'm also attending summer school every day, and it's really inconvenient that they have no orientations scheduled for the weekends. I already know what classes I need to sign up for in the fall, so I don't think I need any help with that.

I remember it stating on the site that you don't need to if your major is in the CLS, but they recommend that you do it.

I'm also thinking now about not going to orientation.

for those that aren't going to orientation, once you submit all of your transcripts, you can look at your own degree progress report on URSA. from what i was told by my prof (who also transferred to UCLA... many years ago, but he did nonetheless) that is basically what they do. they print up your DPR and then tell you what classes you can take in the fall.

i remember reading a thread on this forum about how the counselors seem to be glib and uncaring. maybe that's just counselors in general? lol. my cc has certainly taught me that.

lol It's funny that you say that about counselors because my friends and I were just talking about it. Not only do they seem to not care, but I have yet to meet a counselor who is actually sure about the things they tell you. When I asked my counselor about sending in my transcripts before June 2nd, she was like "I'm not sure." That's why I thank God for the internet because I can figure out what I need myself.

btw...I was under the impression that you actually get to sign up for your classes on the day of orientation. Do they really just tell you what classes you need? I already know that.

I believe that is the case. My prof told me (he did not go to UCLA summer school) that it was a great way to meet new, nervous people like yourself. He also didn't plan his schedule, so he was unaware of what classes he needed to take. They never steered his wrong in his course plan, which is always a bonus.

From what I've experienced on URSA, you can just sign up for the classes yourself. They give you that option once enrollment registration comes out. I think when the Fall schedule comes out, the enrollment registration dates will come out. Which won't be until post June 2nd, or when they release the honors contract information, as such the honors students get priority registration and will be put before the other students.

I just want to know their insights on the difficulty of the classes, which is most likely relative. I'm going to registration because... well, it's there! haha.
