UCLA Over Cal?

because if UCLA isnt even considered the best public in the nation, how is it supposed to play a role like berkeley's where it is challenging the ivies? that's why UCLA has to measure up to cal first. there arent many schools ahead of UCLA but below cal to compare against.

in the mean time i guess, UCLA is fending off the rise of USC and UCSD.

The best defense is offense!! Lets attack the ivies!

UCLA > Cornell and Brown

No ones even heard of Brown!

Also, in most countries like Britian, Japan, Korea. Public universities are actually considered to be SUPERIOR to privates. Stop pidgeon-holing yourself. Los ANgeles county is the biggest county in the US with 11 million. you guys GOTTA rep LOS ANGELES BETTER THAN THAT!

Shiet, bring in the Crips n Bloods if you have to... jeeeeeeeez. LOLZ!

yes i think many of us are day dreaming of what they will become if they go to this school or that school. if u suceed at either school it shouldnt really matter.

im sure many of u have APs to take. focus on that

"Also, in most countries like Britian, Japan, Korea. Public universities are actually considered to be SUPERIOR to privates."

true true. but berkeley is still #1 over UCLA in that. hehe. although sometimes, the posters on collegeconfidential may be too ethnocentric or whatever to care about what the rest of the world thinks.

" Shiet, bring in the Crips n Bloods if you have to... jeeeeeeeez. LOLZ!"

that's USC's job. JUST KIDDING ;)

Berkeley being #1 over UCLA overseas... ?

http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?id=32621

In my experience in Japan, UCLA is pretty much reputable at the same level as Cal. I lived in Tokyo and Tsukuba, and spent considerable time in ***uoka, Kyoto, and Nagoya, so don't say, "maybe only in one city!"

And humorously enough, I found a UCLA section at the Mitaka branch of the popular department store Ito Yokado!

I can't speak for any other country.

i've always heard that UCLA's presence is huge in Asia, but that Berkeley is still king in Asia AND Europe (for publics). I think Berkeley overall would be like a "HYPSM."

I'd love to agree with you (because it'd be logical) but UCLA had something that Cal didn't, at least in Japan.

Who knows?

Berkeley is much more esteemed overseas. But I would bet that UCLA is more "hip," what with Hollywood and all.

my entire family is berkeley grads...a school is only as good as you make it. if you choose one over the other for the sole reason that more people didn't get into 1 or the other your sabotaging yourself.

I'm on the same boat. I still have no idea whether to go to LA or Cal and I have to make my decision in 2 weeks. For Cal, I like everything except the weather. From what I've heard, it's really rainy, and it'll be hard to get used to because I've lived in SoCal all my life. But i've only up been there once and on Cal day it was pretty sunny so I can't judge. Also, does anyone here attend Cal but lives in SoCal? How often do you go back? And how is the housing after 2 years of dorming? Is it difficult find decent apartments? or dangerous to commute at night?

For LA I like the environment but I've lived here for so long that I dont know if i would be able to stand it for another 4 years. Ive been told that the social life at LA is better. Social life is not a priority for me but it is a factor. Can anyone who has lived in SoCal but attends Cal give me an idea of the difference in the change of environment? Also I plan to study abroad so which school would be easier to do that? And I plan to attend Columbia for graduate school. Does Cal increase your chances of getting into an Ivy League for grad school?

If you think the weather in Northern California is bad, then pretty much the entire world outside of So Cal has bad weather. It rains sometimes, but it's generally very sunny and nice.

Stephanie1,

Give me more info on what you want to do for graduate school. That's a broad term, and could me a lot of different programs...

I say nor cal has about 10-15 more rainy days in the winter than LA does.

but the summer time, it gets pretty warm up here, maybe 10 degrees cooler than LA on average, but sunny almost every day. You rarely get that hot, smoggy, you're gonna die if you dont' have water, my skin is burnt kind of days that u get like 20 or so times in LA summers. So its a tradeoff, cus u get more days of "rain that comes up from the ground cus its falling so hard" up here. The falls get a little chilly. You'll never need more than a sweater, beanie, normal thickness jacket in the winter. There are lots of sunny days, but the weather is probably chiller on average by 5-10 degrees. In the winter, at the worst, you'll have about 15-20 days total where it rains like crazy! Also no smog in Berkeley. Its always clean air. But the beaches here suck, LA is much better, but u have more earth hills kind of stuff to look at up here.

LA, u gotta sport good clothes, style. In Berkeley its much more relaxed. You can get away with wearing sweats and sneakers every day if u want to. Of course, u also got the clubbing girls who wear clubbing gear on campus every single day...Also... its not dangerous at all. You have two police departments serving the city of Berkeley. The UCPD, and the Berkeley Police. Its pretty safe here... but I wouldn't let a girl walk home by herself anywhere on any campus.

A lot of my friends from Berkeley are going to Columbia MBA. Its usually Harvard, Yale, UPenn, or Columbia. If you are an Asian girl, for MBA at least, its much easier but harder than for a non Asian girl of course. For Asian guys, u gotta do something special, like join the military or something on top of typical top grad scores. For Asian, it doesn't matter where you come out of school. You will have to be much better than the average to get in anywhere, especially for top school grad schools, just like for undergrad.

Also, for school friendly status stuff...they tried to make this Berkeley-Columbia MBA connection thing goin on, (initiated and pushed mostly by Columbia), but I don't have statistics. They probably did it because they want to come out to the Bay Area so bad from NY for a more chill lifestyle. Hardly any Berkeley MBAs want to go to NY, they all stay in SF.

"they tried to make this Berkeley-Columbia MBA connection thing goin on, (initiated and pushed mostly by Columbia)"

one theory i heard was that new york city wants to keep itself as the financial capital of the world. they dont want san francisco to take all the talent and draw away some of the attention.

Yes, I prefer Northern California weather. Too much sun and dryness is a bad thing. I find that when I'm in LA, I'm constantly on the verge of sweating. I'm sure the smog has a lot to do with it. Up here, it can be cool and sunny at the same time. And rain can be a very good thing. Keeps the plants green and the air cool.

Oh, you were talking about graduate school? Well, carry on.

I think Nor Cal weather is AWESOME. You don't break the 100s except in the summer and its only a few times. Otherwise its 80s and 90s in the summer, and even in the winter, its 50s at the coldest. Sure it goes into the 30s sometimes at like 3AM, but its not like Ill be sitting outside then.

Look, UCLA is just overhyped. It is one of the top notch public schools, but not the best or like top 5 or anything. Name does not translate into best school. I think UCLA is good academically OVERALL. It has the widest selection of majors and far broader fields than Cal. However, if you compare head on Berkeley to UCLA, you will see the programs are quite different in quality. There's a big gap there. You can be pretty good all across the board, which gives you a good ranking, Cal has many top 10 top 5 programs that just show you how good it is.

UCLA > Cornell, Brown? Maybe. Cornell is a low ivy. So is Brown. In many fields sure. If you got into Cornell Engineering, it would be better than UCLA anyday. If you got into Brown's 7 year medical program, then that would own too. Not many schools have that. So it just depends. Otherwise, I would pick UCLA. But remember, that's just because I'm a biased Californian who wants to stay close to home and I like So Cal.

But still, I gotta say... GO BEARS.

You know, the school spirit on this thread and on this board as a whole is just dripping.

I just copied and pasted this post, so don't yell at me if you've read it in the other UCLA hate thread:

Okay, so I just came back from a meeting with a director at the NSC. I asked about UCLA's reputation in the civil service. She replied, "Really REALLY excellent. It's considered a top-tier, fantastic school." For the record, she attended Oxford and Harvard.

When I asked someone working for State, he replied, "Top notch." He attended Georgetown.

And finally, someone working for the offices of John Kerry, and a Presidential Management Fellow: "Sterling." Both were UCLA undergrads and one a GTown, the other a GWU master's.

So, will that maybe settle the debate about UCLA's quality to all the naysayers around here. Probably not.

I can see why all those organizations suck, and John lost his election:)
