I recently got admitted into both UCLA for pre-business economics and Berkeley for pre-business administration. I was just wondering what the main differences between the two majors and programs are. Am I guaranteed acceptance into UCLA business economics as long as I finish all the required pre-requisites? Also, what happens if I don't get accepted into business administration at Berkeley?

I'm just looking for information regarding the pros and cons of each school and general information regarding the schools and programs. I don't really have any clear cut plans for my career after I graduate or whether I will pursue graduate studies so any information regarding either path will be gladly appreciated. Thanks!

At Berkeley, you take the business school prerequisite courses and then apply to the business school in your sophomore year. If you do not get admitted to the business school, you must do some other major. Most other majors can be declared by anyone who completes the prerequisites, but some others (including economics) also need to be applied to before declaring.

You’re guaranteed UCLA Business Economics as long as you fulfill the prerequisites. Do note they include GPA requirements, however.

UCLA Business Economics program really isn’t comparable to Berkeley’s Business Administration program. Despite “business” being in the name, UCLA’s program is essentially just an ordinary Economics program supplemented with Accounting courses.

But, you’ll see through the L&S Econ courses, that there are several business and finance courses which give priority to Bus Econ majors…eg, the 106 classes; and indeed through Anderson’s Management courses there are a lot of accounting-type courses. But for the latter there are some bus & finance courses…130 and above.

The grade requirement to enter the Bus Econ major isn’t anything to be sloughed off as insignificant. I don’t know what the requirement is, but for xfers into UCLA, anything lower than 3.9 won’t get one in. For those at UCLA from their frosh years, it’d probably be > 3.3 gpa maybe higher to go from pre-major to major. I do believe there are some who are admitted to the major from hs.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Also, what types of jobs and internships would be available in each environment and does the actual difference in the degrees make a difference when I am looking for a job. Berkeley would provide me with a B.S. in Business Administration and UCLA would provide me with a B.A. in Business Economics.
