UCLA Ranked #4 in Computer Gaming

This year's controversial university rankings have inspired the Global Gaming League (<a href="http://www.ggl.com%5B/url%5D">http://www.ggl.com</a>) to release its first official ranking of the Top 10 best American universities in the competitive field of computer gaming. For better or worse, UCLA is now featured on the front page of the article and is also ranked #4 nationally, beating out USC. Highlights include our Counter-Strike prowess and frequent LAN parties in the dorms.

As the end of summer approaches, hundreds of thousands of college students are reporting to their institution of choice. Which can only mean one thing: fire up your rocket launchers, boys and girls. It's time to take your classmates to school.

UCLA is, in gaming terms, at least a few years ahead of crosstown rival USC. It boasts two student gaming organizations (Enigma, a card gaming and video gaming club, and a 'Dance Dance Revolution' club). But that's not all.

UCLA has its own 'Counter-Strike' team, Generation-XAssassions (GXA), competing on the CAL-IM level online. Additionally, entire floors of its residence halls have been known to join for communal CS games.

"Last year, people on my floor built a server from spare parts, and we would all just play with our doors open, yelling when crazy frags happened," said Edward 'reflex' Chang, a former resident of Rieber Hall. Chang added that large Xbox parties take place in the dorm lounges because of the availability of big screen TVs. The dorms also have a dual T1 Internet connection, which is modest in terms of bandwidth, but provides excellent ping times for gaming.

The university is, of course, in the same LAN hotbed that USC is in. Multiple LAN cafes are located in SoCal, and such teams as SK Gaming's Girls Got Game (GX3) and most members of Aggression, the former Check-Six Counter-Strike squad, also call it home.
