UCLA school of Film, Theatre and Television Transfer 2014 Thread

Did anyone here apply to this school?

Can you give us a preview of your stats including your supplemental applications?

Based on the last two years they make phone calls to schedule an inteview around the 19th of march, which means that you're most likely on your way to getting accepted, it is the final stage of admission before they decide on the final students that will be offered admission.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for next week, hoping to get called for an interview.

I applied on a whim, but I’m fairly sure I won’t be receiving a call because my supplemental application wasn’t too hot. I definitely rushed my writing samples. But I’m not too worried because I did TAG with Davis and will go study computer science there if I don’t get into UCLA.

Stats about me:
1930 SAT
4.3 GPA in High School
4 AP Classes Total
Editor of High School Newspaper
Involved in Theater
Works 30 hours a week

But I applied to UCLA undeclared after my senior year of high school, was wait-listed, and then rejected, so who knows?

And here’s a link to my writing samples.

Good luck! Hopefully somebody will receive good news.

@blahahaustin: Thanks for sharing you application, your supplements were fine! you have strong academic record in highschool and it is a known fact that UCLA is a numbers school, I’m not sure how they weight the supplemental application on their decisions but you never know. I’m interested in seeing the supplemental application of accepted students in the past years, it always intrigued me how they only choose 15 students per year, the supplemental application of those who were accepted must out of this galaxy lol

I’m happy with the critical essay I’ve wrote, but the personal essay was done very quickly. I will share my supplemental application if I got accepted (which would be a miracle). Not sure if I’m ready to share them now since I always have low confidence on my writing, but I might do it if this thread gets active.

If you applied to this school please make a post, let’s keep this thread alive.

@Harren: Thanks! It’s good to know that they’re not completely awful. And I’m sure that your samples are great!

I’ve heard that the film school takes a really holistic approach to their admissions process and that they really like to get as good as a feel for the applicants as possible. The supplemental application is where you’re really supposed to let your personality shine through, I guess.

I’m crazy interested to hear from other people, too.

@Blahahaustin: Did you apply to other film schools? I applied to LMU and my application for USC was withdrawn because it was incomplete, I might appeal but not counting on it.

In all honesty I have fairly low gpa for UCLA (3.3), I did not have the courage to do my supplements after I submitted my application so I missed the deadline, until in mid February I received a group email that was sent to me and perhaps 12 others from one of the admission committees to give us a second chance to submit the supplements by feb 27, the fact that they had the audacity to give me a second chance gave me hope that perhaps I can prove myself despite of my low GPA.

It seems like the strength of UCLA’s program relies mainly in the quality of screenplays they produce, UCLA graduates make successful feature screenplays more than USC but USC dominates in other aspects, both want good writers but perhaps UCLA’s program emphasis on creative writing more than USC.

has anyone received a call?

I emailed the film admissions office a little bit ago, asking when they’d be calling prospective transfer students for interviews and they said they’d be “contacting them around April.” So I guess we’ll see what happens around then?

Hey @blahahaustin, did they actually say they will be contacting people around April? That’s so comforting if it’s true. I am also applying and I have been waiting for the call in this past week despairingly. I was reading all the threads in the past and the calls seem all happened around March 19 in the past two or three years.

Hi! Current UCLA film student here. The admissions decisions are basically determined through the 3 supplemental essays you’ve submitted, and if you get an interview, that weighs heavily as well. Just thought I could clarify! Also, the reason why the calls for transfer interviews are going out a good bit later this year is because the admissions team had a whopping ~1500 freshman applications they also had to sift through before they could begin to tackle the transfers. I know how anxiety-ridden this time can be for y’all. Hang in there!

Also, this is a really great guide on the differences between film schools (particularly USC and UCLA) and why people like me chose one over the other! (Didn’t go to SMC, but kudos to their department for putting out such a good document): http://www.smc.edu/StudentServices/TransferServices/AreasofStudy/Documents/film_schools.pdf

@peasonacob Thank you for your contribution to this thread. Is the call for interview essential before getting accepted or there are some students that get accepted without getting interviewed?

Excellent document btw, makes things a lot clearer for film students.

@Harren, No problem! Getting the interview is like the second round of the application process. If you don’t get one, it means you didn’t make it to the second round, so unfortunately, you won’t be accepted without one.

@peasonacob: What did you get asked in the interview?

@Harren, I know for a fact everyone’s is different, but they asked me a lot about my personal statement – my “story” so to say, also my concentration interests, favorite books/movies, etc.

hi!!!
Has anyone gotten an invite for an interview??

@peasonacob hi! do you know if the admittance is 30 people for freshman and 30 people for transfers making it 60 people admitted OR is it just 30 overall?? I got invited for an interview and i’m a nervous wreck, just want to know what my chances will be. I know that they’ve already admitted some freshmen, and i know for a fact that they’re going to interview 30 transfers.

Has anyone else received a call/email regarding the interview? I called admissions today and they said calls are going out on a rolling basis. According to a few online posts, some people have already gotten an email.

hey, is the interview only for students applying to the theater department within the film school, or for film and tv majors as well? thanks!

@berriesncream‌ the interview is for film/tv majors

Hi, I am a technical theater transfer hopeful. Just wondering if any one else got this email by mistake?

“Dear Student,
Congratulations again on your acceptance to UCLA’s Fall 2014 Theater Freshman Class!”

It tells all the info about the freshman open house. I was just wondering if maybe it was a good sign that I will be accepted? I don’t know just though it was strange and was wondering if anyone else got it.
