ucla supplemental questionnaire

hi there!!! I got an email from UCLA for supplemental questionnaire. There are two prompts. Should i be answering both the prompts because one of the prompt doesn’t match my personal character? And also is there any tips to make my application look stronger throughout the questionnaire. Please help!!!

I received a supplemental questionnaire from UCLA as well :slight_smile: Yes, you must answer both prompts. One of my friends got into Berkeley last year with supplemental questions. I suggest to be concise with your answer and say nothing too ‘fluffy.’ Maintain a creative writing style throughout, and don’t feel afraid to write about your own story! As many AP English teachers say, AP= Answer Prompt. Speaking of English teachers, write up your responses over the weekend(at least rough draft) so your English teachers can revise them. Not only English teachers, but as many intellectuals you know well enough. Although it appears you have some difficulties in answering the prompt, just go for it. This is most likely your one last chance to really move those admission officers. If you still seem doubtful, remember that the supplement will only help you :slight_smile:

I received one from UCLA and USD yesterday. My academic records are anything but extraordinary, so I hope these essays will save me. :slight_smile:

@awsumpawsum what if one of the prompt does not apply to me? do I still have to answer both?

Are they done sending these out or will they be sending more out this week? I received one from UCSD on Friday for overcoming personal hardships. Do they send this to borderline applicants or everyone who mentioned having difficult circumstances?

@kobe24mamba I think they’re done because I received one from UCLA the same day I received one from UCSD. I also applied to Berkley, but I didn’t get one from them. I’ve heard only 6% of applicants receive them. Everyone with a disability automatically receives one, I’m not sure about hardship.

I got that too! On the form it says that you can answer one, both, or none at all. It’s all up to you! But honestly, I don’t know if not answering both affects their decision or not. I’m facing the same dilemma as you because one of the prompts doesn’t really apply to me (at least I don’t think it does). So I wonder, do they send out the exact same two prompts to all the applicants that they want further information from? Or do some applicants only receive the option to answer one prompt?

I think it’s best to just answer what applies to you. UCLA gave us the supplemental questionnaires because something in our apps triggered it (disability, talent, or hardship).
@seachanging I haven’t gotten one from Berkeley either but I think they aren’t doing it this year. They asked for letter of rec instead.
@onetimeus I’m pretty sure we all get the same two prompts and we answer what applies to us.

@whitejansport Ah okay, yeah I was just wondering about that because I’d seen some people saying on previous forums that they got the supplemental question for something specific such as their talent or what not…but they could have been talking about another UC school so that might’ve confused me.

@heizee4 @awsumpawsum @seachanging @onetimeuser98 Sorry to bother you, but could you please post your stats? I did not receive a UCLA supplement request so I am trying to figure out where I stand. Thank you so much!

@monkeysfall I got a supplement:

2320 SAT
800 Math Level 2
4.18 uncapped UC GPA
4.04 capped UC GPA
3.75 unweighted UC GPA
Most rigorous course load possible, super upward trend (only one B all of junior year), community college classes, tons of APs, etc.
Super solid personal statement and ECs, lots of leadership

Only thing weighing me down is GPA, fortunately they ask for first semester senior year grades cause I got straight A’s with the most rigorous schedule offered.

2040 SAT 720 CR/660 M/660 W
3.73 UW/4.2 W
Also had upward trend in grades from icky sophomore year(3.83 W) to straight A Junior year(4.67 W)
Hooks: Low-income <30k, First-Generation
Taking physics at CC
Ethnicity: Vietnamese/F
Personal statements about how my mother did not necessarily approve of education, so I naturally instilled a liking towards school. The other was about my tutoring a disabled middle schooler. These personal statements basically expressed that I don’t take school as a joke lol
ECs: Lots of music. Some music awards. Internship and volunteering at an Orthopaedics clinic for 150+ hours. Lots of tutoring and educational-based ECs.
Good first semester of senior year. I am taking 4 APs and have received As in all classes except for AP Chem(ew).

Just a question:

I have a super compelling hardship but I can’t really think of an answer to the first question,

In your application, you may have mentioned an extraordinary talent/skill or academic achievement. This may include participation in Junior Olympics, national debate competitions, recognition for musical talent, etc. Please take this opportunity to share with us more detailed information about the level of your achievement, depth of participation, and passion for this particular area.

I don’t particularly have anything really noteworthy to write for this. I don’t have an extraordinary talent/skill or academic achievement. My grades are very meh, and my SAT was good, but I doubt that counts. Is it alright if I just write one for the hardship one?

Or if I do write one for the special talent one, one that isn’t particularly good?

It says you “may” have mentioned an extraordinary talent. I think you should only answer it if you already mentioned an extraordinary talent. But other have said you should answer both. I would call and ask, to be sure.

@twinshk2
Yeah that one doesn’t apply to me as well! Only the hardship prompt applies so that’s the only one I’m going to respond to. I’m not sure if it matters or not, because it says you can answer one prompt, both, or none at all if you don’t want to. I think it just gives the option for both of them because that’s the general format that’s sent to all the applicants.

@monkeysfall I honestly had bad SAT scores. My highest was an 1800 and every other time I took it was below that. I’m in the IB Program, but only as a Certificate Candidate, not full IB. So since freshman year, I’ve taken only higher level classes except for the occasional regular course here and there such as Algebra II (honors was too hard for me) and Psychology (just an elective class). I’ve had straight A’s for most of my high school career except for sophomore year where I got 2 B’s (Algebra II and Chemistry). So my weighted GPA has been a 4.67 on average and then unweighted is 3.89. I’m of a mixed racial background (Mexican and black), female, middle-class with divorced parents. My dad is a disabled veteran so that’s what I wrote about in my personal statement and I believe that’s the reason why I received the supplemental questionnaire.
